Was the Metn election really a political loss for Michel Aoun?
Mustapha Hamoui · Aug 7, 2007
Well, That’s what Jamal, a friend, thinks. He even believes Aoun lost a third of Metni votes because he became sectarian.. just like Gemayel.

With the proliferation of the word “red line” in the Lebanese political lexicon, two of Beirut’s most creative party animals have created a red line of their own: Partying. Below is an actual invitation I got. Read it, it’s really worth it. I censored the phone numbers of the hosts, but if you’re really interested, I can take their permission to send you an uncensored invitation.

-Read Faysal’s good analysis on the meaning of Aoun’s victory and why it could also be considered a loss.

Nitpicking over Armenian wrongdoing could cost Gemayel more than it can benefit him.

Aoun is already asking his supporters to come and celebrate in droves. No one is calling him a sour loser yet but he seems to be asking for a fight. All preliminary results, including his own, were showing that his candidate was losing. He didn’t accept those results, he instructed his webmasters to doctor the online results and he’s now celebrating a premature victory. Very uncool, very undemocratic. Update: I just found this very relevant quotation by Tom Stoppard:It’s not the voting that’s democracy; it’s the counting. We should all reflect on it as the coming night promises to be very tense..Update: It’s official, Camile Khoury has won. Congratulations.

Watch how tayyar.org’s graph changed over the course of just one minute:21:13

The results are extremely tight. The tayyar’s website is doing a good job keeping track, complete with a constantly update graph and details:Check it outUpdate: From Tayyar.org, Aoun declares victory. Weird, since on his own website’s statistics, his candidate is lagging.

Everyone is voting, the turnout is impressive. Everyone is (more or less) getting along. Democracy has already won..

The day before the presidential election, the French took a day off from campaigning “for reflection”. In Lebanon, we reflect in a different way.
