Friend Elias Muhanna of Qifa Nabki lists “Five Thoughts on Turkey and the Flotilla Crisis” that I recommend you read. Here’s a sixth thought which was implied but perhaps Elias was a bit shy to make:6- Many arabs are craving a strong SUNNI leader to emerge as a counter-part to the bombastic Ahmadinejad of Iran. Mr Erdogan’s Turkey is in a way the perfect antidote to Khomeini’s Iran because it provides a model of free-trade internationalism, strong backbone and an anti-Israel fire that is still very much alive in the bellies of most (Sunni) Arabs.

How will The Beirut Spring change? Let me count the ways: More recommendations, more links, less dissertations. As you probably noticed by now, this blog has been on a hiatus for a while. I’ve mentioned the reasons before, but it’s a combination of personal life, back-to-normal Lebanese politics and Twitter (What? You haven’t followed me yet? Do it right now!)Every now and then, I have something to say, an elaborate point to make. But in the mean time, this blog remains idle. How can this be fixed? I always have rants to let out, links to share, recommendations to make, but most of the time, Twitter is more than enough for that.

After almost 4 months of labor, a Lebanese government is finally born. I hope that as Prime Minister Hariri said, this government would be one of performance, not of care taking. Amen to that. Here’s to seeing good results soon.
