Because of a “protocol mistake” according to the party. They say that Mr. Gemayyel as an ex President deserves better treatment. This may sound like small mindedness, but it’s in fact a politically astute stance: It allows Mr. Gemayyel to simultaneous boycott Assad’s visit and keep the door open for future meetings.

Sure, during the Cedar Revolution heydays we had flags the size of entire buildings, but at 150m2 (almost 15m*10m), this one, raised to mark the Lebanese Army’s day, could be the largest ever to ride on a mast (31m high).

I find the Emir’s visit to Lebanon quite significant. It is a known fact that Hezbollah prefers the Emir of Qatar over the Saudi King as an arbitrator, and the Emir is obviously enjoying that role. He pointedly came at the same day as the Saudi King and the Syrian President without crossing their paths. He will spend more time in Lebanon and unlike the others, he will visit the Lebanese south.

When Bush first announced this measure, there was a lot of speculation that it was targeting Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement.
