Mikati To Resign if Tribunal Funding not Approved?
November 22, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
From today’s Daily Star:
The fate of the Cabinet rests on the decisive meeting, as Prime Minister Najib Mikati told ministers who stand against the STL’s funding that his resignation will be in his pocket and he will read it aloud at the end of the session if the issue isn’t approved.
He had been dithering on whether or not he wants to use this card. Only a few days ago, he denied previous reports that he wanted to use this weapon.
It is easy to make fun of Lebanese PM’s threats to resign , but this time he seems to really have the leverage. There’s a reason why Syria’s allies in Lebanon have been making pro-government noises in the past few days; In their eyes, the Syrian regime could use all the help it could get in international and Arab forums. The last thing Assad wants in an upcoming vote (say on Arab sanctions) is to have one of the few countries standing by its side in political limbo.
Hezbollah and its allies may hold their noses and let the tribunal funding pass after all..
