❊ Butros Harb. Newsmaker
January 17, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
Have you noticed how often M.P. Butros Harb has been making news lately?
He first caused a national uproar when he proposed the controversial land sales draft law. He was the first to react to the resignation of the eleven ministers by heroically declaring that “There will be no compromise over the tribunal or justice”. Over the weekend, he broke the news that Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare will hand over the indictment to pre-trial judge Daniel Franzen, and yesterday he surprised everyone by revealing that Patriarch Sfeir has submitted his resignation papers to the pope.
If I were the conspiratorial type, I’d say that someone is trying to raise Mr. Harb’s profile. I would even relate this to his presidential aspirations and building cachet with Christians, since Mr. Geagea and Mr. Gemayel remain too controversial. But I’m not. All I’m saying is that an awful lot of people seem to be whispering in Mr. Harb’s ears nowadays.
