Sorry for the long, unexplained lull in posting. To be completely honest with you, I’m having a sudden lack of interest in Lebanese affairs these days. And no, my blog’s namesake event “Beirut Spring 2008” did not rekindle my passion. It could be a serious case of disillusionment about Lebanon and its politics, or it could be a simple case of I-need-a-break. I should be able to figure that out sooner or later, So for die-hard Beirut Spring fans out there, I hope you’ll be patient.[poll=3]

The Iranians have decided to maintain Lebanon’s status quo until the next US administration. If you’re hanging around Lebanese blogs waiting for that next breakthrough in Lebanese affairs, I’m afraid I have bad news for you. You see, our puppet masters in Iran have decided that they have too many things on their minds to care about this god-forsaken Levant country. This is why they decided to shelve us for now and focus on more important things.According to Alhayat, Iranian sources have been explaining to various Arab states their preference for “calm” on the Lebanese front. Apparently, Iran is having secret talks with US, so it decided, alongside Syria, to keep the Lebanese situation on hold until such preliminary talks bear fruition. In short, we are wasting our time, talking and writing and debating our Lebanese “situation”, thinking we can make any difference. We might as well all walk down the streets with the words “Bargaining Chip” tattooed on our foreheads.

Like Hezbollah’s weapons, the American destroyers will not be used against the Lebanese people. But their mere presence will shift the strategic balance.

Our Minister of education and culture loves Lebanese books. But that doesn’t prevent him from boycotting the International Book Fair in Paris because Israel will be named “Guest of Honor”.

The most progressive Lebanese electoral law proposal is gathering dust because none of the parties wants real change.
