According to Hazem El Amine, Jumblat cynically brought up the Palestinian rights issue to trap March 14 Christians. His objective is to pry them away from their alliance with the Sunnis and create a balkanized political environment that benefits him. Amine also takes a shot at “naive” Foreign activists who are being played on this issue.

The HRW makes its case. Now all we need is to make the proposed legistlation a bit more Christian friendly (like adding guarantees that the law will not be used as a pretext for naturalization) and we can move on from this embarrassing chapter..

The good news is that it passed at all (After 5 years). The bad news is that it doesn’t attempt to tackle the deficit. If we can’t cut discretionary government spending in a high growth period, I don’t know when we can. Ex-P.M. Sanioura had made this exact same point last week.
