At Long Last, World Leaders Ask Assad To Step Down

August 18, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

BBC:

The leaders of the US, UK, France, Germany and the EU have all called for Syria’s President Assad to step down over his suppression of protesters.

Apparently, they wanted to do it earlier but the Turks had asked for one, final chance for Mr. Assad to change his ways.

Of course, world leaders’ asking for a dictator’s resignation does not necessarily mean that he will immediately step down (Remember, they also asked for the stepping down of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe and of Muammar Qaddafi in Libbya, and they’re both still around), but what it does do is send a very strong signal that Assad now is a spent card that you’d be foolish to bet on.

In other words, opportunists will now start abandoning him in droves. I expect things to change in Lebanon too. Keep your eyes on Mr. Nabih Berri and Mr. Walid Jumblat..
