Mubarak On Trial
August 3, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
The New York Times on the symbolism of this moment:
an Arab leader endowed with power once uncontested facing charges of killing his own people. No modern Arab ruler has yet to be tried in public by his people in a revolution they made.
This is indeed a big moment for the Egyptian January 25 revolution and for the Arab spring in general. As dictators go, Mubarak is no Saddam Hussein and no Hafez el Assad, but putting him on trial was the right thing to do, provided the trial is transparent and fair.
