Being Pro Syrian
August 1, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
Yesterday, Ayman Mhanna tweeted:
A quick list of anti-Syrian parties in #Lebanon: Baath, SSNP, Hezbollah, Amal, FPM, Marada, Lebanese Democratic Party, Arab Tawhid Party…
At first, I thought something was wrong with his statement. After all, we have always referred to these as the Pro Syrian parties. But then Ayman explained and it made sense. We have been doing it wrong all these years. If a party supports the dictatorial regime of a country, does that make that party pro that country? What if you supported the people of a country, what does that make you?
At the end we — formerly known as the anti-Syrian camp — came to a funny realization: We are the pro-Syrian ones. Our political opponents should just be known as the pro-Assad or pro-Baath parties.
Unfortunately I don’t think this new nomenclature will catch on. Old habits die hard.
