The Jisr al-Shughour Incident

June 7, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

This is one of those key events that has the potential to explain the nature of what is happening in Syria. Depending on how it is viewed, it can either mean that a civil war has started in Syria or that the regime is becoming very desperate and killing its own soldiers.

I am against instinctively denying (like many activists on twitter are) that some Syrians have started taking up arms against the state. Remember, it is good propaganda to say that all the Syrian protesters are unarmed, but it is also possible that some of the people are sick of being hunted down like sitting ducks and decided to take up arms to “defend their families”

Check out this good BBC rundown of the various versions of the incident from the different points of view. I’m holding my judgement for now..
