In the next few days, we’ll be able to tell if the Nakba events have successfully reduced the pressure on the Syrian regime.

If by Wednesday Arab pundits, bloggers and TV shows are still talking about the Nakba, we’ll know that the Baath will be hanging on for the time being. If on the other hand news like the discovery of a mass grave in Deraa take the conversation back to Syria, the heat will remain on..

Remember, when President Assad told the Wall Street Journal that Syria was immune from the Arab spring because it had an anti-Israel posture, he was essentially saying: “The Syrian people care more about things like the Nakba than their freedom, dignity and economic prosperity”.

In the next few days, we will know if he was right or wrong..
