Lebanese Christians Are Uncomfortable With What’s Happening In Syria

April 21, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Initially, one would think that the Lebanese Christians (or at least the March 14 variety) are happy with what’s going on in Syria and the potential for a regime change. After all, wasn’t this the same regime they accuse of interfering in Lebanon and of weakening the Christians?

But on closer inspection, there’s a noticeable unease going on. They are concerned for Christians in Syria. They worry that they would face the same fate as their brethren in Iraq who were terrorized by Islamists into leaving the country. They also worry that they would be marginalized like the Copts in Egypt as second class citizens who have to justify building churches and constantly prove that they’re not a fifth column.

The truth is, for various reasons, Christians are prospering in Syria under the Baath regime. There is no guarantee that they will be able to equally flourish under a regime with an Islamist leaning, and this is making Lebanese Christians uncomfortable.
