Some Things Never Change

April 12, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Patrick Seal, the veteran expert on Syria writes a column in The Guardian about all the things that will change if the Assad regime falls. He describes how 30-year-old alliances will unravel, how the face of the region will change, how new players will emerge..etc.

But then, he says, some things “remain the same” no matter what happens:

the crisis [is not likely] to reduce Syria’s influence in Lebanon. No Syrian regime of any colour can tolerate a hostile government in Beirut. Its security — especially vis-a-vis Israel — is intimately tied to that of its Lebanese neighbour
