Berri Says “March 8” Is Over

April 7, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Speaker Berri:

In my own opinion the March 8 coalition no longer exists now that MP Walid Jumblatt decided on a new political orientation which I accepted […] We are now part of the National Front, which includes several parliamentary blocs, political groups, parliamentary figures and figures from outside the Parliament

It is important to note that “March 8” and “March 14” were never really meant to be official names for the competing powers in Lebanon. These were just shorthand names given by pundits to make talking and writing about Lebanese politics easier.

But while the cedar revolutionaries embraced the March 14 brand and made it the official name of their political gathering, March 8 The National Front was never comfortable with their March 8 brand, because in reality they have always been a more fragmented association.
