On Lebanese Actors Stirring Unrest In Syria

March 30, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Now Lebanon:

The Syrian embassy has informed Lebanese leaders that “there are Lebanese political actors and officers involved in the disturbances that occurred in Syria,” Speaker Nabih Berri said in remarks published on Wednesday.

In normal times, this should be considered worrying. But name one Arab country that didn’t blame “outside factors” for the revolutionary unrest in their countries. As we all recall, the protests started in Deraa, in the south of Syria near the Jordanian border. Buthayna Shaaban was very quick to blame Jordanian elements for smuggling weapons to Syria.

But when the protests spread to the north, they had to add a new, Lebanese bogeyman to the list (right next to “Alqaeda”). Since official Syria is blaming external elements anyway, why not make that Saad Hariri, their Lebanese political opponent?

But what’s really shameful is Lebanese politicians like Aoun and Berri and their minions playing this dirty game. Remember, it is not Mr. Berri’s place to announce the Syrian ambassador’s concerns because there are normal diplomatic channels for that. But apparently now everyone wants to play the “Let’s whip the Future Movement” game.
