Hariri Could Be Forced Back To The “Responsible” Position
March 28, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
I am reading this with dread:
A “well-informed” source told the daily that Hariri believed Saudi Arabia is in favor of a national-unity cabinet in Lebanon. Lebanon cannot bare a one-sided cabinet “with the developments in the Arab region and Syria,” Al-Jumhuriya quoted the source as saying. Hariri arrived in Riyadh on Saturday for a private visit, according to a statement issued by Hariri’s press office.
Translation: Saudi Arabia will be pressuring Hariri to again form a “national unity” government.
Translation of translation: March 14 will be screwed out of their current position of strength. They will be stuck again in a government where they’re in a position of impotence, and where they will continue to be blamed for everything that goes wrong in the country. We will be stuck again into pointless “dialog” sessions and the Lebanese tensions will simmer on with no prospects of solutions in sight.
Mr. Hariri should resist this as strongly as he can. He should argue that if we return to the previous state of affairs, he will become even weaker than before (fool us twice, shame on us). This in the long run is not sustainable. It’s even bad for the short term with an election coming soon in 2013.
All this for what? Because the Syrian regime is freaking out and asking the Saudis for favors. The Saudis would be seriously misguided if they fall for the siren call of president Assad again.
