So Why Did Al-Akhbar Release The Latest Wikileaks?

March 25, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

It is clear from the content of the leaks that pretty much all parties in Lebanon were routing against Hezbollah in the 2006 war, including the party’s allies (Berri, Aoun and Jumblat). So why did Al-Akhbar, the newspaper sympathetic to March 8, release the leaks and create tensions at the delicate time of forming the new pro-Hezbollah government?

As Michael Young wrote in Now Lebanon:

The net effect of the decision [to publish the cables] will be to highlight tensions and settle scores within the ranks of the new majority, amid reports that a new government is imminent. For example, the leaks are particularly embarrassing to the Druze leader Walid Jumblatt.

Young then suggests that Hezbollah pushed for the leak’s publications to keep its allies in line.

I have a different theory: Mr. Mikati, who owns a significant stake in Al-Akhbar could very well be using the newspaper to advance his own agenda, namely to divide and conquer March 8 so that he’ll be able to form a government from a position of relative strength.

Any other ideas?
