Elias El Murr Starts A Newspaper

March 1, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

From Al-Joumhouria’s day 1 editorial (translation by the Daily Star):

Al-Joumhouria’s ambition is not to add to the numbers of newspapers, but to be of ‘added value’ to the Lebanese press, which has been the leader in the Arab press and its field […] Al-Joumhouria hopes to serve as a platform for all political Lebanese and Arab trends, […] It looks forward to [being] an oasis of dialogue between conflicting views.

They forgot to add:

Mr. Elias El Murr has been under a lot of attack lately, so we thought we’d be his voice in the media to fight back all those unscrupulous allegations.

I was tempted to dismiss this in a “does Lebanon need another newspaper?” way, but then again I remembered how Al-Akhbar changed the newspaper landscape, so I figured: Why not? Let the man have his shot.
