Can Lebanon Pull Off a Revolution? But Against Whom?

February 14, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

It is a common talking point in Lebanon that although the people really (really) are enjoying the revolutions taking place in the region, it is very difficult to have a revolution of our own.

The reason is simple: We’re a divided country. If one half decides to have a revolution, the other half will push back with a counter revolution and we’ll be back to the zone of tense equilibrium we’re in today. There’s a reason why we rank so low on The Economist’s shoe-thrower index.

But is it a hopeless situation? One group is trying regardless: “الشعب اللبناني يريد اسقاط النظام الطائفي”, or , “The people wants to take down the sectarian order”.

I wish them luck and I support their case wholeheartedly, but count me a skeptic. This to me this is the equivalent of Americans trying to have a revolution against capitalism.
