Why Do Sunni Billionaires Like To Become Lebanese Prime Ministers?
January 26, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
Here’s an interesting observation by one of my readers, Gilbert:
It occurred to me that Mr. Mikati is a billionaire and is tied with his brother Taha as the wealthiest person in Lebanon, according to Forbes Magazine. He and his brother are apparently richer than the Hariris…It is also known that Prince Walid Ben Talal wanted to run for PM of Lebanon a few years back, but that there may be some issues with his paperwork (his mom was Lebanese).
What is it about Lebanon that attracts super welathy Sunnis to public service? I don’t think the same can be said about other communities. It is a good thing as many of these leaders spent a lot of their own money with helping others. It is however, strange that rich people from other sects have chosen not to get into politics.
Strange indeed. Can anyone offer any explanation?
