Turkey Bowed To Iranian Pressure On Lebanon

January 19, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui

Hürriyet (Turkish Newspaper):

A day after announcing it is supporting a French proposal to resolve the political crisis in Lebanon, Ankara has apparently bowed to pressure from Iran and decided to put forth its own inclusive “action plan” instead.

In a nutshell, France wanted an international meeting on Lebanon in Paris that doesn’t include Iran. Turkey agreed to join. Iran then intervened. Turkey backpedalled.

I wonder what this says about Turkey’s new role in the region. The message this sent to me is: They’re only just starting to learn the ropes.
