Will Hariri Be Reappointed As Prime Minister?
January 13, 2011 · Mustapha Hamoui
This is one of the questions being raised now in Lebanon after the opposition has resigned. In theory, Mr. Hariri can be replaced If you add the M.P.s of Walid Jumblat to those of the opposition. That would form a unilateral government with a very slight majority.
But would such a government be sustainable? Michael Young:
the opposition, with Walid Jumblatt, [might want] to form a government of its own, with a pro-Syrian Sunni as prime minister. However, this would be no easy task, as there are few legitimate Sunnis eager to head a government against their own community, its principal aim to shield the assassins of Rafik Hariri.
In other words, P.M. Hariri is likely coming back. But what is the point of resigning then? You might ask. Why enter into a paralizing process that will take at least several weeks to run its course? Heaven knows, perhaps the opposition was hoping that mixing up the cards will give them some leverage. The name of the game is wait (as in really wait) and see..
