US Pushing Against Compromise On Tribunal

December 3, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

In what can only be seen as a coordinated campaign, both Susan Rice (US Representative in UN) and Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State) have weighed in today on the STL.

Clinton:

The Special Tribunal represents a statement by the world that the era of political assassination with impunity in Lebanon must end, […] To those who claim that the tribunal will destabilize Lebanon, I would answer: justice is not a threat to Lebanon’s stability. The attempts to subvert justice by undermining the tribunal are the threat.

I’m curious about the timing. Are they sensing the a Saudi-Syrian compromise that will undermine American interests, or are they simply preparing the grounds for an indictment that appears to be around the corner?
