The FPM’s Conveniently “Pragmatic” Stance On The STL

Qifa Nabki is intrigued by the way a Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) political operative, Ziad Abs, explains his party’s position on the STL:

Abs is arguing that whether or not the STL’s case is legitimate, the consequences of an indictment against Hizbullah would be so grave (leading to an Iraq-type conflict) that nothing short of a complete torpedoing of the Tribunal by the Lebanese government would prevent a major disaster. What’s interesting to me is that Abs precisely did not say that the FPM regards the STL as an outright conspiracy (as Nasrallah has argued). He said that it doesn’t matter whether it is legitimate or not: what matters is that its consequences would be too explosive for Lebanon to bear.

A logic which of course is convenient to the alliance between the FPM and Hezbollah.
