“Not The End Of The World”
September 23, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui
French ambassador in Lebanon Denis Pietton:
it would not be the end of the world” if Hezbollah members were indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).
What I find amusing is that most of the world powers now take it for granted that Hezbollah will be indicted and are now trying to manage the consequences.
And yet I find Mr. Pietton’s position odd. You see, P.M. Hariri tried this “not the end of the world” tactic before. He told Sayyed Nasrallah back in July that if Hezbollah members were to be indicted, they would be considered “rogue” and “undisciplined” member. That brought us the whole “Israel did it” brouhaha and now the “False witnesses” trap.
And yet Mr. Pietton’s hopes triumph over Lebanon’s experience:
Hezbollah, as a party, will not be accused [of Rafik Hariri’s murder] if [Hezbollah members] are indicted
Will Hezbollah and its allies be more cooperative because the argument came from the French?
