“Stop This Law” Campaign Aims To Prevent Lebanese Parliament From Passing a Draconian Internet Bill
June 14, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui
Gabriel Deek, founder of “Stop This Law”:
The ESSA (Electronic Signatures and Services Authority) was established under this law with discretionary, selective, subjective and very broad and unjustified powers, beyond the objectives of the law and its functions. Its prerogatives are almost repressive for all “service providers” of electronic services and economic sectors at large
Translation: A bunch of powerful, unaccountable bureaucrats will breath over the neck of internet users in Lebanon. Oh and by the way: Those bureaucrats will be chosen according to their sects (Arabic)
So why should you care?
Well, because the people who suddenly decided to ‘regulate’ the internet are the same people who banned Skype and the same people who are responsible for the lousy internet infrastructure in Lebanon. If you want to take part of this campaign before it’s too late, they have a Facebook group, a Youtube channel and a twitter account.
But what matters most is you spreading the word.
