Israel Itching For Another War
April 15, 2008 · Mustapha Hamoui
First the Israelis practiced for war, now they’re looking for an excuse to start one.
Lebanese reaction to maneuvers: “Do not disturb, we want to sleep” (source: Alhayat)
You have got to question the timing. After days of conducting one of its largest military drills ever, the Israeli Minister Of Defense Ehud Barak (of Lebanon withdrawal fame) pokes the UN to enforce resolution 1701 to stop the transfer of weapons from Syria.
From the confines of an Israeli airbase, this is what he had to say today:
“Resolution 1701 is not being applied. The transfer of rockets from Syria to Lebanon is continuing and Hezbollah’s military build-up is continuing,” [..] “I think the Security Council has to act and see how the resolution is applied and enforced,”
Not thinly veiled in his statement is the “or else”, which came with a preview this morning in the form of an incursion.
Although there’s no mention of Iran in Mr. Barak’s statement, we once again find ourself in an all too familiar quandary: The Lebanese government is doing its best — with the help of the Germans — to monitor our border with Syria, yet Hezbollah keep getting their missiles anyway (unless Mr. Nassrallah is uncharacteristically bluffing). The Israelis are not happy, and they’re now reminding us that we should try harder or they’ll bomb the crap out of us. Great.
