Faux-Sympathy

February 8, 2008 · Mustapha Hamoui

The opposition’s posturing on Hariri’s memory is disingenuous and sickening.

In his OTV appearance, Sayyed Hassan Nassrallah said that the M.O.U between Hezbollah and Aoun was lesser than the one that existed between him and the then Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Mr. Nabih Berri is berating Mr. Saad Hariri for “sowing division” at the eve of his father’s memory, which was “supposed to be a unifying memory”. The endlessly annoying Assafir thinks that it’s “unfortunate” that Mr. Saad Hariri is “exploiting” his father’s memory to divide the Lebanese and declare war on Syria and Iran.

The opposition leaders and media can pretend all they want that they respect and appreciate Mr. Rafik Hariri and his memory, but the fact of the matter remains that they are doing all they can to protect his killers and undermine the tribunal which was created to bring him justice. The opposition mobs regularly vandalize posters of the fallen leader and buzz with anger whenever someone utters the words “Rafic Hariri International Airport”, while Aounists regularly refer to him as a thief.

Actions speak louder than words, and that is what Mr. Saad Hariri seems to have finally understood.
