Who is Targetting UNIFIL?

Some people say I immediately rush to accuse Syria (I pointed fingers on twitter as soon as I heard about the explosion). They say that for fairness’ and objectivity’s sake, I should consider the possibility that this is a “criminal act” or a terrorist act by Alqaeda.

I’m having none of that. I don’t have hard evidence, but consider the following:

  • An attack on the UNIFIL took place while leaders in the G8 were considering sanctions on Syria in the UN Security Council, the same body that created UNIFIL
  • Lebanese pro-Syrian politicians like Wi2am Wahhab have a habit of threatening UNIFIL publicly if Syria was “targeted”
  • The Syrian foreign minister said that “Europe made a mistake” in sanctioning Assad. The UNIFIL soldiers targeted today were Europeans.
  • Before that, Rami Makhlouf, the Syrian president’s cousin clumsily threatened to cause regional instability if the regime is endangered
  • The party that is most interested in shaking things up now and changing the topic is Syria.

I say the burden is on Syrian regime to prove it didn’t do it..

Bin Laden Had Porn ?

His 5 wives must be scandalized:

The pornography recovered in bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.

This is a great story and I can see a lot of ink spilled on calling him a hypocrite. But remember, the source is anonymous and likely to be American. It could very well be a smear job..

Even If You Hate The US, You Shouldn’t Praise Bin Laden

I don’t think I’ve read anyone who’s more virulent in his hatred of the US than Ass’ad Abu Khalil (a.k.a Angry Arab), but even he is warning that there’s nothing to praise about Bin Laden:

By any measure or by any standard, and no matter whether one is right or left, the man was a fanatical terrorist. There is nothing romantic or glorious about the life of this fanatic terrorist. How would we progressive fare under a rule by such a man? How would a woman fare under his rule? His cv is littered with war crimes and murders. He is a killer and his political claims should be dismissed.

Anti Americanism in the Arab world should evolve to become more like its (mainstream) counterpart in Europe. It should be secular and based on economic and political ideology, not on some medieval paradigm of Crusaders vs Muslims. “Progressives” (an umbrella term for the Left, anti-capitalists and anti-imperialists) make wrong bedfellows for islamists. They are almost in every way their complete opposites. Even the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” principle shouldn’t change that.

Where Bin Laden Lived

The big house in the suburbs:

The compound was eight times larger than any other home in the area. It was surrounded by walls measuring 12 feet to 18 feet that were topped with barbed wire. There were additional inner walls that sectioned off parts of the compound and entry was restricted by two security gates. And the residents burned their trash instead of leaving it outside for pickup. There was a three-story house on the site, with a 7-foot privacy wall on the top floor.

So much for avoiding attention. With such a large sum on his head, I’m surprised he managed to stay alive for so long in such a conspicuous place.

How Bin Laden Was Killed

Straight out of a Bond movie:

The elusive al Qaeda leader was killed in a targeted assault in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad, roughly 40 miles outside the capital city of Islamabad. The raid was conducted by a small helicopter-borne strike team. The team was on the compound for under 40 minutes[...] Omar Khan, a local resident in the area of the attack, said American and Pakistani commandos landed in the area at 1:10 a.m., local time, and raided a house. “The entire area was rocked with a massive explosion,” he said. “A massive exchange of firing took place which continued for more than half an hour.” Security forces have cordoned off the area.

We could witness some revenge action in the next few days, so expect a lot of security measures in whatever airport you might be heading to soon. But there is no doubt that this is a severe blow to Alqaeda..

Osama Bin Laden, World’s No 1 Terrorist, Killed By The US

President Obama:

Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children.

Not only America should celebrate, but Arabs and Muslims as well. Nobody killed more Muslims than that hateful murderer..

A Lebanese Woman Who Deserves Scorn

Meet Brigitte Gabrielle:

Brigitte Gabriel bounced to the stage at a Tea Party convention last fall. She greeted the crowd with a loud Texas “Yee-HAW,” then launched into the same gripping personal story she has told in hundreds of churches, synagogues and conference rooms across the United States: As a child growing up a Maronite Christian in war-torn southern Lebanon in the 1970s, Ms. Gabriel said, she had been left lying injured in rubble after Muslims mercilessly bombed her village. She found refuge in Israel and then moved to the United States, only to find that the Islamic radicals who had terrorized her in Lebanon, she said, were now bent on taking over America.

If only those who profiled her in the New York Times know what a laughing stock she is here in Lebanon. But why blame her? She’s just exhibiting typical Lebanese business opportunism: She noticed there’s a market in the USA for her wildly exaggerated storyline and has embarked on a relentless campaign to sell her product.
