International Photojournalism Exhibit In Beirut Cancelled

AP:

A World Press Photo exhibit in Beirut closed early after Lebanese authorities ordered the removal of an Israeli photographer’s prize-winning work, an organizer of the exhibit said Friday [...] Erik de Kruijf, a World Press project manager, said the organization preferred to close the exhibit 10 days early rather than face censorship.

I can’t really make up my mind if this was the right thing to do. The exhibit after all was a prestigious event for one of the world’s most coveted prizes. What if a Lebanese had won that prize and was looking forward to the exhibit?

Update: More thoughts on this story in my next post..

  1. Good PR for World Press Photo. What kind of an exhibition would thinking people rather go to? One that bowed before the censors or one that had the cojones to stand up for freedom of expression. As for the hypothetical prize winning Lebanese
being short changed, he just might start forming some political consciousness. Bad for Lebanese censors.
