Using Boats As Taxis To Beirut

July 13, 2010 · Mustapha Hamoui

Khaled Takki, head of the “Lebanese Water Transportation Alternative” plans to start a revolution in Lebanese public transportation: Water ferries modeled after those used in New York’s Hudson and London’s Thames rivers.

“instead of having frayed nerves by the end of the hours-long commute, this will allow employees, students and tourists to enjoy the trip and read the paper over breakfast or a cup of coffee “

Sounds like a dream come true. But I’m skeptical; getting into and out of harbors can be a hassle in its own right. Besides, most of the traffic for those coming from the north starts at Dbaieh, a relative stone throw from Beirut. In other words, the traffic is generated within the greater Beirut area.
