Sarkozy is no ideologue. He is first and foremost a cynic. Remember that he is the first guy who flew to Moscow to congratulate Putin on his electoral 'victory' while the whole world knew the Russian election was a sham. A fw weeks later, he hosted Kaddafi in Paris to win some contracts for Dassault and Framatome. Sarkozy wants to nudge Syria towards peace with Israel and also wants to advance the club med trade project. Also don't be surprised if America is involved and gave him a nod. The US and France have often pretended to follow different policies with France doing some things the Americans would like to do but can't.

I need to disagree with you here
Maybe sarkozy sold us out, but france didnt, the french are <a href="http://www.dailystar.com.lb/article.asp?edition_id=10&categ_id=2&article_id=94110" title="enraged" rel="nofollow">enraged</a> of sarkozy's invitation to assad to the military prade.
Sooner or later sarkozy will listen to france if he want to get re-elected.
