Why They Chose Seniora

Lebanese politics

A loyal, thick-skinned and safe pair of hands with no political aspirations is what March 14 wants right now.

(source)

Mr. Hariri was tempted, but something didn’t feel quite right. So he decided to consult his base and his allies and got an unanimous reaction: We love you, but now is not the right time.

It would be political suicide for Mr. Hariri to be Prime Minister ahead of a crucial election. It would allow the opposition to do to him what they did to Mr. Seniora: Blame him for all that is wrong in the country, from high food and oil prices to security outbrakes, in order to score points in the upcomming elections.

By keeping his distance from office, Mr. Hariri will focus on building alliances, on reviewing his long-term strategy and on consolidating his movement. Mr. Seniora on the other hand is used to being a straw man and has proven his mettle for keeping his cool under fire.

This might anger the opposition a bit, but Mr. Seniora is March 14’s best bet for this period.

I agree with your assessment. Now is not the time for Hariri. His time will come after the elections in the spring of 2009, if and when the majority remains the majority.

Well i guess there is another possibility:

They are putting forward Saniora right now but he will be unable to constitute a national unity government with the opposition.
    2 cases scenarios:
1- or we go back into the crisis
2- or they will put forward Hariri as a more adequate candidate, “a compromise candidate” in other word.

We will maybe pass right now into a new crisis in the following weeks.

Stop, PLEASE STOP fooling yourselves and stop tweaking reality.

“What everybody would like to ignore or forget must nevertheless be stated, namely, that we have sustained a total and unmitigated defeat….”
(This was Churchill in 1938 on the Munich Agreement… Might as well have been a courageous and honest Lebanese on the Doha Agreement. Oh shit, what am I saying? I forgot, we HAVE NO Churchill! Just a bunch of dishonest groveling unprincipled merchants. And so the “merchant republic” gets consecrated into the Republic of the Bazaar… and a very bad one at that.)

For those that wrote off M14 as defeatist and HA gained the upper hand in Doha you better think again. Now that we got a president which the opposition was refusing in the first place, plus the honorable Saniora (a first caliber statesman) back as PM, all the sudden the opposition doesn’t look too victorious!

We each passing day the State and its institutions will gain strength and it’s another nail in HA’s coffin.

Ever wonder why all the Syrian lackeys are silent these days? Because Syria sold HA out. That’s why Nazralha was frustrated and sweating excessively on Monday. Nazralah tried to change the facts on the ground by assaulting Beirut and the Mountains, though he was dealt a bloody nose in the Chouf and and now looks more isolated than ever.

and I should mention that the precedent to the Doha Agreement is eerily familiar. It is called the Cairo Agreement (1969); “a date that will live in infamy”, in which Lebanese legality abdicated and relinquished its prerogatives to Palestinian thugs and their quisling “Lebanese” allies). Here again, in 1969, the “Agreement” was hailed as a triumph for Lebanon and it came on the heels of a 7-month economic and political paralysis orchestrated by the Palestinians and their Lebanese allies (and both their foreign masters, Syrians and Egyptians etc…) Finally, after 7-months of pillorying, intimidation, and abuse, the Lebanese surrendered and Palestinian armed presence in Lebanon was consecrated, hallowed, and given “legal” cover. The rest of history, as they say.

But when will we ever learn from history and from past mistakes???
Ah, but Lebanon is required to forget history, as remembering the past is discomfiture for some –among them our “Arab brothers”; the most useless lot at conflict resolution btw.

Below is a quote from the brilliant Rabih Alameddine’s “The Hakawati”, which I find especially apt (and especially devastating) today:

“And you [father], why do you keep telling my kids these old stories?”

“They’re not just your kids,” my grandfather replied. “And don’t blame me for this one [story]. I was telling how I married your mother. An old man has a right to reminisce, and children need to know where they came from.”

“Every time you tell one of your stories, something horrible happens.”

Good point Mo.. the problem with Lebanon is too complicated and sensitive.. not going to explain history here, but a big problem with the Lebanase people is that they love leaders and will kill each other for a boss instead of loving their country..

God bless Fu’ad Sanoira. He is so much better than Sa’d Hariri who is a dishonest political opportunist and family politician like Hillary Clinton or George W. Bush in the United States. Like ‘Aoun, I do not trust a word that comes out of Hariri’s mouth. Sanoira showed his wisdom and his moderation in all of the crises he has been through. I honestly think that both the opposition and the majority are extremely ridiculous when they criticize Sanoira’s government and leadership.

And while I am blessing people, God bless Michel Sulieman who honestly now looks like he was the best pick. Some of the hardliners on both the March 14th side (Nassib Lahoud) and the March 8th side (Michele ‘Aoun) were just too much. Sulieman showed his leadership in the Fatah al-Islam conflict and he shows it now. I am glad he is endorsing the tribunal for Hariri.

Now, back to business. Lebanon should privatize the entire telecom business and join the WTO because its left-wing nationalized industry is killing it’s economy.

The Ugly Crying B***h Signora is back…..Congratsssssssss….
It was a Big Slap in the opposition’s face….They deserve it…..
The decision took in naming Signora is a decision good only for the 14 clan, not for Lebanon, coz it’ll bring the country back to the old conflict or at least the status quo….They didn’t think about what’s better for Lebanon, but they thought about what’s better for them, and to tease the opposition even if it tears the country apart…..
He’s a man deprived of all dignity, and of all sense of patriotism…..
“By keeping his distance from office, Mr. Hariri will focus on building alliances, on reviewing his long-term strategy and on consolidating his movement.”
Steif Hariri kid can’t even focus on his own reflection in the miror,so how’s he supposed to focus on anything else…..plus he’s not the one taking decisions here, other people are taking ‘em for him, blame it on his lack of brain…..
Now we’re gonna see a Xeroxed copy of the old ugly people in the goverment with only few changes……
We Lebanese only think having a leader a master,we never think about a country…..
Well dudes, congrats, for Soleiman,Signora,Hizbo’s and Future party’s weapons and Criminals like Gaga and Jnounblat back to rule you,and put you facing each others and sucking up your money, and keeping your kids leaving the country…..

  27.

i think we need a picture of sanyoora kissing someone’s ass. not proverbially kissing, but actually kissing. mustapha, for the sake of full disclosure of truth, can you help make this happen? do you have the necessary social connections? i’m sure you do. please, for the sake of all of us.

we all know that politicians are ass kissers. especially politicians like sanyoora who are primarily motivated by and engaged in the facilitation of business and power for others, with a (relatively) little pittance going into his own pockets.

i can’t shake the notion that somehow, in some weird way, in such politicians’ circles, physical ass kissing occurs, of course behind closed doors. in addition, i feel that there must be some kind of secretive photographic documentation that occurs of aforementioned ass kissing.

please mustapha, help satiate our wildest, deepest, most lurid, political voyeurist desires, as helpless powerless public bystanders, and your own secret desires, by helping attain some kind of picture of sanyoora kissing someone else’s ass, and posting it here for all of us to ogle at.

    PLEEEEEEASE!

    thank you.
