Lebanese 1960s Election law (Map) + Beirut Update

Here’s a map that shows the districts of the 1960s electoral law that will be used for the next general elections in Lebanon.

A lot of people are interested in seeing this, so please pass it around.

Update: Here’s a map of Beirut’s new law from Blogging Beirut (more details here)

  1. L.

I checked with , Blacksmith Jade, Now Lebanon and Assafir and they all point to the same division. So I guess that’s what we’re working with now, unless a future clarification adjusts it.

    Leitmotif,

I see you’re a designer like me. How come you don’t have any “about me” page on your blog?

  2. What are the gains that the opposition got out of the new distribution of votes in Beirut’s districts?
    Thanks.
    .

  3. Leitmotif and Steve,
You have more in common than you think.
You’re both from Tripoli I think. Shit, perhaps you even know each other. You should get together for a cup of coffee when you’re back in Lebanon Mustapha.

  4. Well i don’t think it’s the best electoral law ever,it s got its verry big flaws…..but still it s way better than Hariri/Kanaan law……
I really do think the new goverment should study a new modern and more representative election law,and in a way or another i appreciate the Boutros electoral law project……

  5. Good map, good work!

One Interesting parameter; where would Aoun run in 2009? and would he get a seat? He is unlikely to get much traction now.

Of course, a year is a long time in politics.

  6. Thanks for this map. Do you know where we could find a map of the previous electoral divisions? Also, have you seen a map of Beirut’s divisions? Thanks again. This is great.

  7. Can you please Mustapha let us know, if you have the information:

    1) The number of MP that will be elected in each Qaza’.

    2) The demographic and religious (confessional) facts in each Qaza’.

Alf Mabrouk to all Lebanon!!!! Hope this will be long lasting solution (and not a 5 years break).

  8. for the one who asked if going back half a century was a good thing, one answer : Truth must be looked for everywhere, including the past. Christ lived more than 2000 years ago, and the coran is 1400 years old…

  9. I don’t really understand how pursing further confessionalism is a victory. why and what are we celebrating? Our threshold for joy and satisfaction is so low, c’mon we should celebrate bigger things, like working on having one state, not dividing what we have even further.
Then again, when yesterday you were being shot at and today you are alive, that is not such a bad start.

  11. Hi there

Can someone please give me an idea on the win/loss ratio for March 14 and the others in the 2009 elecitons? There seems to be this idea floating around that the way Beirut was divided up and the way the 1960 law was set up in the rest of country, that it definitely favours the Hizb Allah/Amal/Aoun alliance.
    1 – Is this true?
2 – How big will their majority be?
    Cheers

  12. kess emkon kelkon ya ouwatjiye yellaan aboukon kellkon nehna mam nenkesser!!

  13. Why dont they cut up Baalbeck/Hermel into 5 pieces so it is the same size of the other regions? This block is like a 1/3 of Lebanon just by itself.

  14. i think the majority of this elections will take it the opposition chi 60%. hizbollah and amal will take all the chi3a seats and hariri all the sunnite seats and jounblatte w talare irsllane will take the druz . finally, the competition will be in the christian part but i think aoun will get 60 % and massi7iyi 14 azar 40 %
