Patience Will Triumph

The best thing the government and the majority can do now is be cool and wait it out.

Let them play. They’ll get bored soon (Photo credit: Reuters)

Remember back in December 2006 when Hezbollah took to the streets with a large amount of people for the stated purpose of toppling Mr. Seniora’s government? The Prime Minister told the Lebanese back then to stay home and raise Lebanese flags, until they ultimately weathered that storm and Mr. Seniora arguably prevailed.

Today, pro government hot-heads are seeing red. How dare they invade our areas and block our roads! “They need to be taught a lesson!” They spurt. But like in 2006, March 14 fans could do much worse than relax for a few days. Not because they’re cowards, not because they’re powerless, but simply because it’s the best way to beat Hezbollah’s thugs.

You see, Hezbollah goons are not behaving rationally. They are angered by the perceived encroachment by the government on their divine right to the Airport’s security levers. But if March 14 allows the dust to settle, Hezbollah rioters will realize that they’re cutting their own noses to spite their faces. The roads they’re blocking are also used by their families and friends who also want to travel, trade and live normally.

Moreover, “shock and awe” is a deliberate tactic by Nassrallah for cowing the Lebanese. If we are neither shocked, nor awed, we will take away Hezbollah’s psychological advantage. If on the other hands March 14 fights fire with fire, they will help feed Hezbollah’s supporters’ sense of victimization and prolong their “resistance”.

Leaders should be doing more to persuade their supporters that calm is the best weapon. Unfortunately, there are no signs of that.

  1. Don’t you think the better solution is a national unity government that gives the Shites and Sunni’s and Christians equal representation in the spirit Lebanon is based on??

Yesterday Amal without Hizballah help took security control in less than 8 hours of 75% of Beirut. THe futuremovements armed elements ran and there was no resistance. If the LF tries anything in the Christian areas, it will find a force of thousands of FPM elements of the army ready for them. This has been planned for a long time and the reality is that the Futuremovement now only has a controllling presence in parts of the North.

Spare the country further trouble, recognize that the Lebanese must coexist as equals. You may see the 14th of whatever as a legitimate government, 50% + of the country see’s them as militia’s (proven yesterday) and Sanioura’s gov as Ali Baba and the 40 thieves.

The fascist, suppremacist tendancies of the Future trend and their conspiring with the US most give way to coexistance and shared power.

  2. Do you think it’s OK to let Hezb retain permanent control of the airport?

  4. Don’t confuse March 14 morons’ hesitation with patience. They just don’t have a clue what to do next. My guess is that they will be unable to respond to Hezbollah neither peacefully nor violently, just like they have been for the past year and a half.

  5. Mus,

What a dumb thing to suggest. Everytime HA breaks the state down a little bit more, takes downtown, now the airport, makes threats to the state (”You can’t fire Wafiq Shuqeir or else!”).
If the gvt is going to just do nothing and “weather the storm”, might as well have the govt pack its bags and go home. I mean, why do we need salaried government employees if Nassrallah is the one who gets to decide if Shuqeir keeps his job or not?

There’s no comedy quite like unintentional comedy. Yep, its the ones whose newspapers and TV stations are being burned to the ground and whose homes are being invaded who are the fascists.

Those guys with the guns doing the burning? They’re just seeking coexistence.
