Israel Itching For Another War

Plain Talking

First the Israelis practiced for war, now they’re looking for an excuse to start one.

Lebanese reaction to maneuvers: “Do not disturb, we want to sleep” (source: Alhayat)

You have got to question the timing. After days of conducting one of its largest military drills ever, the Israeli Minister Of Defense Ehud Barak (of Lebanon withdrawal fame) pokes the UN to enforce resolution 1701 to stop the transfer of weapons from Syria.

From the confines of an Israeli airbase, this is what he had to say today:

“Resolution 1701 is not being applied. The transfer of rockets from Syria to Lebanon is continuing and Hezbollah’s military build-up is continuing,” [..] “I think the Security Council has to act and see how the resolution is applied and enforced,”

Not thinly veiled in his statement is the “or else”, which came with a preview this morning in the form of an incursion.

Although there’s no mention of Iran in Mr. Barak’s statement, we once again find ourself in an all too familiar quandary: The Lebanese government is doing its best — with the help of the Germans — to monitor our border with Syria, yet Hezbollah keep getting their missiles anyway (unless Mr. Nassrallah is uncharacteristically bluffing). The Israelis are not happy, and they’re now reminding us that we should try harder or they’ll bomb the crap out of us. Great.

  1. Yeah war should happen because our debt is still 40 billion. We want more round numbers like 50 billion. We won’t stop till we reach the 50 billion.

(but then a 100 is more round than 50 hmmmmmm)

  2. it sounds to me like it’s hezbollah that is itching for a fight! shouldn’t Israel prepare for their defense? As usual the impotence of the security council mixed with an emboldened hezbollah warrants these menuvers. By conducting these displays of force I think Israel is trying to show that if they are attacked as they were in the last war their response might not go as badly as it went last time! If anything this may be their best chance at preventing another war!

  3. You are misreading the news guys!
Israel is saying that Hizballah is getting Iranian weapons through Syria! Which means that they will be on the receiving end in case Israel was hit by Hizballah. I think Israel is building its case so the world will not object to its response! By the way, the next war will be multi-nation with heavy missles.

  4. They should’ve thought about hitting Syria back in 2006, instead of pounding our milk factories and reassuring Assad that he was safe….Just saying.

  5. Israel will do whatever it wants to do at its own timing, and as usual having the element of surprise with it. HA is ready knowing all too well that another round is coming and it will not go down without inflicting all the damage that it can with its inventory of persian missiles. As for Lebanon, it will once again play the role of the sacrificial lamb.

  6. If by “inflicting all the damage that it can” , you mean HA inflicting all the damage that it can on LEBANON, then yeah. I agree.

  7. HA does not care about Lebanon or Lebanese. Their priority is to protect Iran and Syria!

  8. Relax guys and girls.
Looks like it’s war indeed, of words and threats.

  9. Shouldnt the war restart after we elect a president and things get back to normal in lebanon? maybe the best time for a war between isreal and HA is next summer, when tourist season is fruitful to burn down.

  10. Lets see if barak is willing to deal with the root of the problem i.e. syria(for allowing the weapons to be smuggled) instead of just verbally bullying the lebanese… doubt it.

  11. I agree with those who feel that Syria will be the prime Israeli target on the next go round. They control the Hezbos and the whole idea is to have the Hezbos do all of the bleeding. When it comes to Syrian blood remember how they reacted when Turkey massed on their borders a few years ago demanding that they throw out the Kurdish terrorist leader - or else. The fellow was on a plane for Kenya(?) a couple of days later. The Hezbos are expendable, not so the Syrians.

  12. The Security Council just issued a letter emphasizing the importance of the Secretary-General’s concerns. These were expressed in the SG’s letter of February 28th. The SG reiterated his conviction that the solution to the threat to Lebanon’s sovereignty is the disarmament of Hizbullah “through a Lebanese-led political process”, however “I regret to note that the persistent deterioration of the political climate and the prolonged deadlock have not been conducive to addressing the issue meaningfully at the national level.”

So it isn’t Syria and it isn’t Israel who are responsible, but the Lebanese politicians themselves - and behind them, the Lebanese populace that refuses to hold its own politicians and the values they represent accountable.

Ultimately, this points to a moral failure of the Lebanese themselves: to think they can host, shelter, and nurture a nest of violent outlaws in their midst, to their mutual profit, while bleating that as noncombatants they ought to be immune from attack. Unless Lebanese can surmount their usual prejudices and limitations and grasp the unthinkable they and their country are doomed.
