Fisk: Army’s Shooting On Civilians Unlikely

Links

While Hezbollah continues to stoke the flames of hatred against the army, veteran British journalist and Beirut resident argues that “It’s far-fetched to think that Lebanon army fired at the protesters”.

Did the Lebanese army shoot the eight dead? It appears that soldiers may have shot one of them by accident. But since one of the victims was the Amal militia’s liaison officer with the national army, it seems unlikely that soldiers would have opened fire on him.

Unfortunately, to make his argument, Fisk used his beloved-yet-unsubstantiated argument that Shiaas form the majority in the Lebanese armed forces, although he could have stuck with the better argument that the army’s track record speaks for itself.

  1. “When is a Civil War a civil war?” - Fisk asks. NowLebanon has an interesting article today about all the events in just the last several weeks and “drawing a new green line”. It’s pretty clear that it’s already begun … can it be stopped? According to NL, Nassrallah will use Amal to start incidents so that he can still claim to never turn his arms on Lebanese - and so far, that appears to be the case. Will Berri continue to go for this? He will end up the patsy.

Is it a “civil war” when it’s begun by a guerrilla force that has foreign leadership, funding, arms, ideology and control? Sounds more like an “foreign coup” of some sort to me.

  2. It’s stoking. Why would they stalk flames?
Jeez, buy a dictionary in between your propaganda ejaculations.

  3. I hope that the army shot and killed all 8 of them, I hope it’s true that the snipers are actually christians from the other side.
Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Unfortunately, they are dragging the lebanese to a civil war (or a foreign coup as Ace pointed it so well) that part of the lebanese don’t dare to fight.

  4. I stopped reading after I saw the word “Fisk”..

The guy has zero credibility (even though I do agree that it is unlikely the Army shot at the protesters).

  6. Pity you Fisk! This guy never got over the humiliating Syrian pullout from Lebanon and his ‘coverage’ is nothing more than another piece of Syrian and HA propaganda.

  7. I have long suspected the presence of a renegade force within the Lebanese Army that may be responsible for many of the recent killings. Such an organization would have access to intelligence such as the timing of the protest and the role of Mr. Hamza.

The fact that two senior Army officers are suspected to be involved in the assassination of Mr. Hariri, including the former head of intelligence, would lead credence to this theory. This would explain why they have been able to move car bombs with ease, including Baabda region.
