This is a post with three links related to Lebanon. What they all have in common? They’re funny, but some of them can make you cry.

The Danish situation – From The Onion
• There’s a place in the UK named Worcester. The roads in its westlands estate have become so awful that the locals have begun signing a petition: “Fix potholes on estate that looks like Beirut”. Here’s one of the locals explaining the problem:
He said: “About six months ago, they patched up an area just up the road, but that is all they do. To keep doing small repairs all the time must cost an astronomical amount. The place looks like Beirut!”
The man must have visited our beloved capital during an election season.
• Speaking of election seasons, the U.S. Republican party is looking forward to the Michigan Primary. But Michigan is known as a treacherous place for Republicans. It’s a place driven by factions, ancient hatred and fluid alliances. This is why Michigan is officially known as, wait for it: “The Beirut of the Republican Party”. Don’t believe it? Check for yourself.
• Now for a bonus funny post, but I have to warn you: You can’t read this in an office, unless your boss really appreciates sudden bursts of uncontrolled laughter. This is from The Onion: Syria Attends Mideast Peace Talks For Free Continental Breakfast. If you only have time for one link to read, this should be it!
Tell me what you think..

Hello, my name is Mustapha and I've been blogging about Lebanese society, business and politics since February 2005.
I can’t stop laughing…especially as you suggested, the third link….
Mus,
I think the first 2 stories refer to Beirut during time of war, not today or election time.
It’s equivalent to saying ‘like Vietnam’. Nonetheless, the images of war and not civilization are still what’s stuck in people’s mind, and that’s a reality check.
As for the food story, there’s always a hint of truth in the Onion’s stories. You mean they didn’t offer Kosher meals to the Israelis or Labneh and markouk for breaksfast?
The Onion is well known in America as a comedy newspaper – perhaps creating its equivolent in the middle east could bring some laughs
Question: Do Arabs giggle at Farts ?
Americans do – I actually want to know
The last one is priceless. The Onion always surpass themselves…
Do Arabs eat bagels? (bagel = a boiled ring of dough) In the US bagels are considered Jewish food. The word “bagel” is Yiddish for “ring.”
Andrew,
Fart jokes? lower form of humor. Even in the Arab world,
Anon,
Come on. Are you really asking that? We all love bagels!
And for the record, Muslims are advised to eat at jewish places when no ‘hallal’ stuff is to be found.
i wouldn’t exactly use the terms ‘factions, ancient hatred and fluid alliances’ to describe politics in Michigan or anywhere in the US.
Ali is correct…nothing, other than native histories, is “ancient” within U.S. borders. And “hatred”, wherever or whenever it occurs, always has an individual as its source.
Well Ali,
I didn’t invent the terminology. Just click on the link provided in my link (the one to politico.com) and see the words used in an american context.
