Here’s a summary of the theories making the rounds in Beirut concerning the killing of General François Hajj.
Theory 1: The thugs in Damascus
Who killed him: The Syrian Regime
Why they did it: Because they want to keep the Lebanese executive authority paralyzed for trouble-free maneuvering and because they’re threatening Mr. Suleiman with a similar fate if he dares to challenge them.
Why it’s plausible: The Syrian Vice President said only yesterday that no one could beat Syria in Lebanon. Also, Syria has a history of meddling in Lebanese affairs.
Who believes this theory: The pro-independence March 14 movement and many independents.
Why the theory could be in doubt: The victim was ideologically close to Syria’s allies.
Theory 2: The dastardly Zionists and Americans
Who killed him: Secret American and Israeli agents
Why they did it: They are intervening through terrorism, as they usually do, to save the March 14 group from a politically weak position. They are also ridding the Army of a potential anti-Israeli leader
Why it’s plausible: The sophistication of the attack and the scale of the security breach can only be executed by very resourceful agencies.
Who believes this theory: Amal, Hezbollah and some Aounists
Why the theory could be in doubt: such a move by the Americans is very risky to their March 14 allies and could cause an enormous backlash if uncovered.
Theory 3: Al-Quaeda Terrorists
Who killed him: Hardline Islamists
Why they did it: They want to revenge Mr. Hajj’s successful military campaign against their diabolical schemes in the Naher Al Bared camp in the north.
Why it’s plausible: Only a suicidal freak can ram an explosive car in a General’s car in the heart of the Army’s security zone.
Who believes this theory: Politicians might end up adopting this theory because it’s the most convenient and the most face-saving.
Why the theory could be in doubt: for such a major “success”, you’d think Al-Quaeda’s leadership would jump in to claim it. That didn’t happen yet.
Honorary mention, Theory 3.5: The Evil Saniora
Who killed him: Fouad Seniora’s negligence
Why he did it: To undermine the Christians and monopolize power.
Why it’s plausible: It’s always Seniora’s fault
Who believes this theory: Michel Aoun
Why the theory could be in doubt: …
Hello, my name is Mustapha and I blog in The Beirut Spring about Lebanese society and politics. I started in February 2005 after the killing of P.M. Rafik Hariri.

Actually there are 3.75 theories …
“The Ouwet Front: A Lebanese Forces Blog: I blame Michel Suleiman ..” that’s worthy of a 0.25 isn’t it ?
Mus, add another 0.10 to your pot:
Who killed him: syrians, fatah
Why they did it: what in south america is called “archive burn”, or, “the guy who knows too much”
Why it’s plausible: The whole el-bared enchilada was full of gray zones, and given that this guy maybe was pro-sirian and the sirians maybe (ok, they did it) had a hand there….
Who believes this theory: not even me
Why the theory could be in doubt: Despite being the truth, the CIA will deny everything.
Sure, fell free to change the “who did” and include hariri jr, as is public knowledge, the fatah gentleman were in his payroll… :)
Lord, those bastards are desecrating le Liban….
Good point on the void of any claim by fatah islam or any other group for the assassination. Maybe something will surface in the next few days but this is starting to look more and more like every other assassination in Lebanon, complete with endless motives, little to no witnesses and the only evidence being a smoldering shell of a car making it another practically unsolvable crime. Would figure that the intelligence branch of general directorate of general security or army could start connecting some dots considering the fact that almost every single assassination in the past few years has been carried out in the same manner. Sounds like the same scenario every time: Car is parked on side of road shortly before their target passes by, explosives detonated by remote from distance. Are the people who’ve been carrying out all these assassinations really that good at what they do? Or are the lebanese intelligence services completely wracked with incompetence & corruption? Or maybe all of them know who’s resonsible but simply lack the capability to do anything about it. I suppose my guess is just as good as the next.
How about Hezbollah. That’s a big possibility.
All these killings are clearly benefiting them, and making them stronger each day. They do know how to infiltrate and have intelligence everywhere.
Mus, congrats on your first ‘Edgy’ post in quite some time.
And please don’t take it in a negative way; I loved your post. It means you’re out of the ‘Political Mental Asylum’ (Al 3ousfouriyya al siyasiyya) syndrome that is taking over in Lebanon and I think we should all try to emulate your behaviour and get back to our reasonable selves, away from M8/M14 polarization and look for the facts in a professional and educated way.
Good job at removing the blame off the mossad and/or cia, it’s not like they would do such assassinations, right?
The only thing you can be sure off is that they won’t do it for the eyes of M14 that’s for sure.
It is very hard to think that Israel has a grudge against the Lebanese army or that it seeks to create chaos in Lebanon; it is also very hard to imagine the US creating such a mess to advance their overall goals of freedom and democracy in the middle east.
Nah, let’s crack a joke that they wanted to support M14, hence laying the mossad/cia off the hook - the fact that it is risky to M14 should even lend more credence to that denial.
Brilliant
ZH- Ok, but what’s so enlightening about this post, with all due respect to Mus. Anyone could have theorized on this.
Some politican said today “we need actions, not words”. All we’re doing here is talking to each other. We’re a bunch of helpless people.
A handful of political assassins have hijacked the country and dragged with them Iran, Syria, US, France, and made us believe that our solution goes via outsiders.
Who’s going to say enough is enough and act on it?
Sorry for the additional post, but we need some creative solutions here.
I wished a totally new Party would emerge, a true Lebanese one that transcends all religions and territories and that would just want Lebanese sovereignty, independance and prosperity above all and any interests.
The sad truth is that if a brave person popped their head and started talking like that (a la Gebran Tueni for e.g.), he would be a dead guy probably the next day.
One of the theories being promoted on al-manar TV through a certain ex-army officer with the surname of Sukkariyeh is that the Lebanese-Forces did theattack since the late General Hajj was implicated in the bloody war that pitted teh LF to the lebanese army in the late 80’s.
any thoughts?
All Zionists look as the blond in the pic ?
.
Theory 2: Secret American and Israeli agents
That is a theory that in a normal country five year old children wouldn’t even believe. I mean seriously, Isreal/USA killed 8 anti-Syrians because they want to strengthen the anti-Syrians????
And all while there is an active UN investigation into the killings..
I cant believe people actually discuss this stuff..
World Slams Lebanon Assassination
BEIRUT, Dec 12–The assassination of a senior army commander on Wednesday drew a chorus of international condemnation and warnings that Lebanon’s latest killing will further destabilize a nation locked in its worst political crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.
Brigadier General Francois al-Hajj, head of army operations, and his bodyguard were killed in the early morning blast that hit their car in Baabda, a wealthy area that houses the presidential palace and several embassies.
Syria condemned the assassination of al-Hajj and affirmed that Israel and its agents in Lebanon were the only beneficiary of the murder.
“Israel and its agents in Lebanon are the beneficiaries of this crime which cost the life of a Lebanese patriot who believed in the army, defended the resistance and worked for a united Lebanon,” a Syrian information source was quoted as saying by the official SANA news agency.
Iran also strongly condemned the killing of the Lebanese army officer, and said Israel was the only one to benefit from unrest in Lebanon.
“We strongly condemn the assassination of Francois el-Hajj, which was aimed at disrupting agreement among Lebanese factions to resolve disputes,” foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said.
“Enemies of the Lebanese, especially the Zionist regime, profit the most from creating insecurity in Lebanon,” he said.
The Hezbollah movement denounced “the heinous and criminal assassination”, in a statement.
“We urge the Lebanese to rally around the army and to work seriously to build a political agreement in order to save the country from shortsighted policies that allow criminals to worsen the crisis in Lebanon,” it said.
The United States also condemned the killing, with National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe saying in Washington that President George W. Bush was determined to stand by Lebanon.
“This is a crucial time as Lebanon seeks to maintain a democratically elected government and select a new president,” the spokesman added.
French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who visited Beirut seven times over the past six months to try to spur a presidential vote, termed the killing “part of an obvious attempt to destabilize” Lebanon.
European Union External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the attack was “a contemptible act that puts an even greater pressure on Lebanon’s delicate situation.
“The European Commission condemns unreservedly that act which should by no means obstruct the process of electing the new president,” she said.
Arab League secretary general Amr Mussa urged the “Lebanese political parties to head for an agreement on naming a new president of the republic as quickly as possible.”
Jordan’s King Abdullah II sent a cable of condolences, saying the “criminal act targeted efforts to achieve national conciliation in Lebanon.”
In Beirut, ruling majority leader Saad al-Hariri — son of Rafiq Hariri — said Hajj’s assassination aimed at plunging Lebanon into new political disarray.
Western-backed Prime Minister Fuad Siniora later chaired a security meeting, while a senior official in his government said that the murder of Hajj was “a crime targeting the only unified and strong institution that remains in Lebanon.”
In late 1970s, Al-Hajj survived an assassination attempt by Israeli agents, who bombed his car for his refusal to work with them.
The Lebanese general again refused to stand by the Siniora government during the 33-day war that Israel waged against Hezbollah to uproot the resistance movement. Israel suffered a crushing defeat and Siniora lost face in the eyes of the Lebanese public, leading to the withdrawal of several ministers from his cabinet that later sparked the country’s worst political crisis since end of the civil war. Lebanon is currently without a head of state after former President Emile Lahoud’s mandate ended in late November.
It was clearly suicide.
General Michel Aoun statement following the assassination of Brigadier General Francois el Hajj
Tayyar.org
Following the assassination of Brigadier General Francois el Hajj, General Michel Aoun made the following statement to media representatives in his Rabieh residence.
“We are suffering a huge loss today with the horrific assassination of Brigadier General Francois El Hajj. I extend my warmest condolences to his family, to the army commander and to the Lebanese people who have lost a noble and staunch military. He was brave in the battlefield and wise in decision-making. The pain is doubtlessly devastating but we will overcome it and carry on with our mission. Words cannot describe our profound sorrow.”
Question: Some parties seeking political benefits have already started talking about replacing the ministers in the Cabinet.
General Aoun: “We got used to the fact that every time there is an assassination, there is a party that takes advantage of the situation and the crime is used locally and internationally. We are sorry that the Security Council announced yesterday that there will be problems and today this assassination happened. Local and international forecast of assassinations have always happened so far. Using this crime and evading the responsibilities show that there is a conspiracy between the party who is benefiting from the crime and its perpetrator and these two parties might be the same. This is a problem we’ve been facing since 3 years now. We condemn this government for failing to catch the perpetrators of any of the assassinations. This is the 18th assassination targeting a specific figure and now it has targeted the most important security institution in Lebanon. Those things cannot happen by pure hazard. I have said this before and I reiterate it today, where is the intelligence of all those big countries in Lebanon, where is the professionalism required? Where are the security apparatuses of those great powers assisting Lebanon in the investigations of the assassinations?
They have always blamed Syria for the assassinations but now Syria is on good terms with the current regime and will be so with the next one and with the majority that used to accuse Syria for any assassination. They are on good terms with each other. It’s about time we knew who is hampering the peaceful process in Lebanon especially that we were about to reach an agreement to make Monday’s session successful and elect a president. Fouad Siniora, Saad Hariri and those meeting now in Saifi have to give the answers to all these questions and the “children” should refrain from making political statement every day. We promised the Lebanese people a happy holiday season but we thought that those who are making these statements today have acquired a minimum level of good will and have returned to the consciousnesses.
It is a pity that a martyr of this level be taken advantage of. It’s a historical disgrace for every one who uses such rhetoric.”
Question: General Brigadier Fancois el Hajj was one of the candidates to succeed General Michel Suleiman as army commander. Does his assassination aim at undermining his line in the army?
General Aoun: “He was the number one candidate for this post.”
Question: Was he your candidate?
General Aoun: “Yes, he certainly was.”
Question: What will the opposition do to prevent the abuse of the assassination?
General Aoun: “I believe the crisis has deepened because the assassination is close to the government. The Lebanese people should reject this government under which all these assassinations occurred due to its policy and weakness. The minister of interior should resign after all this. They said previously that Syria was responsible for the assassinations, but Syria today is pushing for their candidate. And now they will tell us the Syria is responsible for the assassination. Can’t anybody in this government unveil one assassination, one of the 18? Who is protecting the Lebanese people?
We don’t want to rush to conclusions about the identity of the perpetrators.”
Question: the assassination happened in a high-security area and the targeted figure is a high security official…
General Aoun: “This is a serious issue. It resembles the assassination of Pierre Gemayel. It is a protected assassination. We want to know who is protecting these assassinations.”
Question: Is there any relation between the assassination and the battles fought by the Lebanese army in the past against local militias and in Nahr el Bared?
General Aoun: “I do not limit the suspicions to only one party. But the circumstances of the assassination prove it was protected. If the perpetrators of this assassination are the Narh el Bared terrorists and they are protected, then this is a real catastrophe and if it is not them i.e. some third party that is also protected, then it is a bigger catastrophe. We are facing a catastrophe at the level of security and we fear that the one who is supposed to protect us is the one that is killing us.”
Question: Is there a relation between the latest fiery statements issued by the majority after the return of Saad Hariri and following this assassination?
General Aoun: “The first time I was pessimistic was when I heard them and after this assassination.”
Excellent post Mustapha.
I add to it: Syrians did it with full collaboration of Hizballah:
- They have the motive: El Hajj is the one who won in Naher El Bared and in charge of the Resolution 1701.
- They want to eliminate any potential threat to their holy arms.
- It is the same date of Jebran Tueini’s death. Al Akhbar.com was almost mocking the news saying El Hajj was ”hero’.’
As for the ”’chilling”’ gangsters: of course they’re accuse the imperialist conspiracy! We should chill in between. No place for anger according to them!
Notwithstanding western or Arabian help, March 14th should build their own deterrence power. Until then, every patriotic Lebanese is under danger.
Does anyone know if they distributed Bakala in Dahyié again??
The argument that Syria couldn’t have killed Hajj because he was “close to its allies” is nonsense.
Do we forget that Syria killed Rene Moawwad, who came with its blessing, when it was the dominant military occupying power?
From the posted article above:
“What will the opposition do to prevent the abuse of the assassination?”
hahahahahahahaha…
They will make sure the right to assassinate will not be abused, as it currently is by those illegal thugs running the country and abusing their powers.
I vote Zionist conspiracy because of the blond. You have a better picture?
Mus still haven’t heard from you.
Furthermore, Mustapha, there was no suicide bomber in this operation. It was a parked car packed with explosive detonated remotely.
what a mature post, sorry to poop everyone’s party. would you have the courage to show this silly post to francois’ family? maybe they will feel better when they chuckle at the subtle humour? you ignorant heartless people.
I wonder if the HA crowds were as jubilant as whenever a M14 figure got assassinated… not to mention handing out baklava on the streets.
@Theory 1:
The mere fact that they killed an ally would actually be in favor of the theory and not in doubt of. It supports the sending of a clear message: “we are not afraid to kill our friends, so enemies beware”.
The rule of thumb is: The fewer the number of detailed facts known, the greater the opportunity for rumor and speculation.
Rule for propagandists: If additional facts do not support their initial claims, ignore every such relevant fact.
Malek el batata, you chose your name wisely.
Let me ask you a question here: have you heard anyone criticize the work of the likes of Pierre Sadek as immature? Or do you assume that he feels embarrassed of displaying his caricatures because they are immature??? I never saw anyone as brilliant in summing the political scene in a single picture.
It’s called satire, by the way. You should meet more British people.
The Muslims killed him. He was The Great Commander who defeated Hizbollah supported Terrorist Militia. The Christians should unite against Sunnis, Shias, Druze, Syria N Iran. Otherwise history will repeat as happened in Bethlahem. We will be wiped off from Lebanon.
:) hehe mustapha why are we seeing more wackoooooos writing? Have they been let out of some mental asylum and we just arent aware of it.
Dear frank,
Have you considered seeking for a doctor ? you know, it’s called “professional help”.
The christians should unite, sure, like any other group of folks that have similar ideas/vision and MUST work together with the other groups for ADVANCING the COUNTRY. You should be ONLY against individuals (not sunnis, shias, martians, hobbits, etc) that are actively destroying the country!
While M14 and M8 are having fun rubbing nasal mucus on each other faces, the country is sinking…. I love this “consensus” thing
Z.H.
funny you should say i should meet more british people when i’m married to one. and the british don’t mock deaths the next day and be insensitive to their families. in fact, there are such things as taboos in the world of caricature, for example making fun of the holocaust. the comparison with pierre sadek is a tautological one and completely false, especially that this blog actually passes as serious. and one more thing. you’re a douche.
[...] Yesterday another person was murdered, I don’t know who killed General Francois Ell Hajj but I know that you really feel secure in a country were a top army general gets assassinated next to the ministry of defense, the presidential palace and many military barracks! [...]
My sincere condolences to the Lebanese Army and the families of the victims . Am sure they will be in God’s glory. Amen ( Please M14 pricks make a pray for them now. Thanks)
Fouad Saniora’s government and his minister of interior are involved in this crimes, because they have failed to protect Lebanese citizens after more than 18 assassination, assassination attempts and bombings took place in more than two years. The M14 always wanted an Army commander that they could control, that is why they want the presidency so bad .That way their president could name an Army commander loyal to them. That was their plan with The Army Chief General Michel Suleiman before his name was proposed for the presidency. But when the M8 propossed him it was a bless for the M14 that saw this move as a cut to their effords to name a Chief Army. I remember Wi’am Wahhab saying after the M14 accepted the nominee of Michel Suleiman, that the presidency was not the issue now. He says the real question was : Who’ll be the next Army Chief ? I think he hammered it right in the head.General Francois El Hajj ( R.I.P.) was very friendly to the Syrians, very close friend with General Aoun,Always worked with HA. going back years ago against Israel and the Ahad Army in the south during the occupation. He was a man wanted and marked for death. Am sure that if General Aoun wasn’t under the protection of HA. he would be Death by now. I wonder if the one who are protecting the country are the same one who are doing and cover the killing. Let me think…..Long Live the General Aoun. God bless him.Amen
Dear Fadi and other Wackos
Is there any problem with Tayyar or Almanar? Why don’t you go there and write any M8 (Syrian/Iranian) propaganda that you like. At least over there, the dummies (including you) will believe you.
Are you lost? do you need directions to your propaganda sites?
People that are reading and contributing to this blog are smart. that characteristic does not apply to dummy M8 followers.
So, get lost… and go somewhere else…..you stupid moron.
Fadi, your general is nothing but the useful idiot. you must be a moron for failing to see it. and yeah “may god bless him..” which god is that, the one nasralha talks to?
Batata guy,
No one is making fun of the dead, if anything, we are seeking answers (not very good ones) and making fun of conspiracy theorists.
As to people like Fadi(USA), they won’t let the gvmnt rule and then blame it for everything.
Having said that the gvmnt and Saniora suck and are not doing anything.
Finally, and unfortunately, people like me cannot escape from morons like Fadi. I left Leb to get away from these people, but I guess the morons at US immigration keep giving the Fadis of this world, and worse, visas.
And Fadi, tell idiot Aoun and yourself that without the US, that Aoun is now fighting, Syria would still be in Lebanon, Lahoud would have another extension up his ass, and the army would still be beating on you guys.
Fadi(USA)
Actualy you got a point that nobody can deny.Yes is it posible, very posible and I think that the people that are talking against you have though abot it to,becouse nobody have made any contra comment about you Consperacy Theory. And am not going to comment against you neigther for the same reason.I been reading all your post and after reading them I start to ask:Who you realy are? You sound like somebody that read and have a lot of information.Because that’s what I do.Only Big Poker player Beat and talk the way you do,because they have the winning hand.I’ll be watching your post( If you dont mind of course ).
the ouwwet libnenniyehh did it to stop aoun…
Why not Hezbollah? A strong christian boss of the army, from the south, is a hindrance to Hezbollah’s state within the state.
Multiple wacko with one aim: misinformation. The poor Truth is lost reading some of these comments.
This is what is called: ”Brain Fucking” aka March8 domain of expertise.
Excuse me, but “Brain F-cking” is watching porn, what you refer to is “Brain bleaching”.
Tony,Tony,Tony….
Read very carefull CrackHead when I post something, OK Dude? Francois El Hajj was marked for Death Long time ago, during the ocupation of The South, because he was working against Israel and The S.L.A.Let me put it in simple words for your low octane brain : He was part of the HA.aparatous and they are hurt because he was a very important piece of their game.He had a price over his head because he was dangerous, and honnestly I think that they took to long to take him out.Maybe they forgot about him and then when they saw him as the # 1 candidate for the post of Army Chief then the hunt was on again.Imagen if he was dangerous before as an Army Officer, how dangerous he’ll be as an Army Chief General? Very,Very,Very bad News for M14.The order was send : “TAKE HIM OUT NOW”.And Tony stop smocking that crack shiit.Lebanese weed is one of the finnest in the world.Long Live the General AOUN.God bless him.Amen
Perhaps we are all tackling the issue from the wrong angle, here let me explain further. Instead of seeing how awfully awry everything has gone to the point where political struggle is manifesting itself in physical liquidation, we fucking deal with it. and we start trying to figure out whoddunnit. that question, lads, is irrelevant. political assassination has been a trait of lebanese politics since at least prince fakhreddine, and don’t go blaming it on the U.S, Syria, Israel, Whatever. It is us. the problem is us not them. But also, only idiots would see these powers as neutral, they are all involved in Lebanon, dirtily and otherwise. Also, ALL politicians have blood on their hands and don’t exclude the Hariri camp from past though indirect involvement in the civil war. But the true murderer here in every single crime and assassination is the Lebanese people. We are the cancer of the land, and just look at the comments above to see how each and every one of us is more than willing to assassinate others for a difference in opinion.
The ultimate theory:
Who killed him: Arab stupidity
Why did they kill him: We Arabs are still backwords minded and making up conspiracy theories every two days.
Why its plausible: Has anything bad in the Middle East ever not have its roots
in Arab stupidity?
Who believes the theory: Anyone but Arabs.
Reasons to doubt: Arabs will make another ten conspiracy theories which debunk this.
Fadi,
Good effort but not convincing. I think Francois would be a “true “moukawem” working for lebanon. Hezbollah works for iran’s interest, and its own. There is no free lunch from iran dear Fady. Just like Slueiman was considered a pro syrian but is now a true lebanese, same for Francois. This is why he is out, which is also a message to Slueiman.
Crack shit eih? I think u inhale aoun’s fart day and night, which is more dangerous…
doctor geagea is the one who wanted to change the armys “3a2eedi” in his words “thawrit il arez” are the ones who wanted to sue francois 7ajj and other officers who they said that are on aoun side when black tuesday happend and francois 7ajj was the candidate when michel slayman leaves so mmmmmmmmmm let me think who will benefit from his deathhh mmmmm geagea i think that is a logical answer

THE MAN WAS CLOSE TO SYRIA, HE FOUGHT THE LEBANESE FORCES, HE’S ANTI-ISRAEL.
WHY THE FUCK WOULD SYRIANS KILL HIM???
BUT I CLEARLY SEE WHY ISRAEL WOULD.
They are killing all the patriotic lebanese, those who do not work for feudal warlords but only for the good of lebanon. Those who killed him and the one before obviously want to destroy any chance that lebanon has at peace and development.
Why dont they kill saniora, hariri, jumblatt, aoun, nasrallah? Because these people will drive lebanon to it’s destruction and that’s what the killers want.
Francois El Hajj was very likely to not have allowed that, and have involved the army in maintaining peace, that is why he was killed.
