Hezbollah Speaks To Naharnet

The choice of Naharnet as a channel for Hezbollah to make a very important announcement is significant.

Hezbollah MP Hussein Hajj Hassan told Naharnet‘s Daila Nehme that in the event of an Israeli-American attack on Iran or Syria, Hezbollah will only “denounce and reject” the strikes “nothing more”. In other words, Hezbollah will not attack Israel.

But why make such an important statement to a web outlet that is in English and has more readers outside of Lebanon than inside of it?

For precisely the above reasons. Naharnet, a member of the respected Annahar‘s family has risen in ubiquity after the Cedar Revolution, where the entire world took interest in Lebanese affairs and enjoyed daily updated news in English from a Lebanese website with a reputable name. In other words, Naharnet has a large international and Israeli readership.

In speaking to Naharnet, Hezbollah is sending a message (of peace?) to the outside world (including Israeli and American public opinion) while maintaining plausible deniability with its Lebanese supporting masses in case they change their minds to say the truth in Arabic.

  1. Who cares what HA propaganda machine says. After all, their supreme leader Seyyed Hassan turned out to be be the greatest liar…

  2. Hezbollah has become a lame duck. The Shia community is acting as if Israel has provked last year’s war but they know better. They have forgiven Hezbollah for the damage incurred, but they will not forgive twice, at least not if Hezbollah is again the agressor.

  3. Vox,

The Shia community is acting as if Israel has provked last year’s war but they know better.

I’d like to believe it (that’s my gut feeling), but care to elaborate (any anecdotal or other evidence)?

  4. Most of the Shia konw that HA started the war! They did not forget but for Saied Hassan everything is ok! But this time, more people will question HA “why do we have to defend the Syrian or the Iranian regime?”

  5. People are dumb. They haven’t bothered to question before. Why would they question things like “Why do we have to defend the Syrian or Iranian regime?”

Aren’t these the same people who insisted over the year on defending the “arab cause”, the “palestinian cause”, and all sorts of other causes that have absolutely nothing to do with Lebanon?

  6. You’re looking way to much into this Mustafa. Hezballah are thugs, if they want to wreak havoc, they’ll wreak havoc. Period.

  7. You’re reading way to much into this Mustafa. Hezballah are thugs, if they want to wreak havoc, they’ll wreak havoc. Period.

  8. They know that neither will be attacked – and Amjad will be assasinated soon enough – its the only “option” to deal with them

    Im sure the Saudis Agree

  9. Mr. Hajj Hassan is a liar. Hezbo has no say in a war decision. The decision will come directly from God to Khamenei and then to Mr. “Divine Victory”.

  10. As an Israeli. Any time Arab politicians, especially Islamic ones, are talking about Israel in such language is good time. Is it also possible that the voters of the Hizb. like most people, do not wish war? Is it possible that the leaders of the Hizb., or some of them, are aware of this mood? Is it possible that the man is assuring his people in such indirect way that the leadership of the Hizb. is aware of this mood?

  11. HA, just get civilised and incorporate yourselves in the nation’s army. we all know you are strong militarily, which is great, but use this strenght to strengthen lebanon as a nation, and not Syria/ Iran who are 200 years behind. I mean look at them, the whole world despise them including North Korea and China, No I don’t want Lebanon to be an image of them thank you!!

  12. By now everybody should know the basis of Shiaat and Alawit deception techniques, they use Taqia to hide their real aim and give us lip service… I hope the new generation of Shiaa will stop this practice.
