Lebanese Teens Now Joining Israeli National Service

Links

Teen daughters of the SLA members who fled to Israel after the 2000 Liberation are now serving the Israeli government.

To some Lebanese, the South Lebanon Army were traitors. To others, they were victims. But to most Lebanese, it is morally confusing what to make of Jessica Hashem, the 18 year daughter of former SLA members who is now doing her national service in Israel:

Jessica Hashem, an 18-year-old resident of Ma’alot, and daughter of two former SLA members, has been volunteering in the pediatric unit of a Nahariya hospital for the past month. “It is very gratifying,” Hashem said of her service.

“At first I thought of enlisting in the IDF, but my parents refused. My father said it was bad enough that the country stabbed them in the back, and he didn’t want the same thing happening to me.

“I decided that with the motivation I had, I had to do something, so I decided to volunteer in something close to my heart; children and medicine. I was received very well at the unit.,” Hashem explained.

I see nothing wrong in what she is doing, except for her contemplation of joining an army designed to kill. Helping children is gallant, regardless of where they are. If I live somewhere, I would like to contribute to the community I live within.

Israeli people are no less human than Lebanese are, and being able to see them as such, while hoping that it would be reciprocated, is the only way forward.

If you call me an idealist, then you are just coming up with an excuse for your instinctive hatred and prejudices, an excuse for the laziness to break away from all the preconceived ideas and feelings instilled in you.

Jake the snake, take a hike you little hypocrite.

The righteous indignance of morons like you never ceases to amaze me.

you people LOVE to pontificate on the lack of scruples of those who reject your irrational hatred of Israel, yet you grovel and bend over backwards (or forward, and touch your toes) before Syria, Iran, and other likeminded Lebanon haters.

People like you are the last monkeys on this planet who can give lessons in patriotism and loyalty to country.

Allow me to respectfully puke on your God, His Party, your filthy Sayyid, and your entire culture of Syro-Iranian lackeys and lapdogs.

    See you in hell, Jackass!

Well I don’t see the point of such a question, she belongs there, after all As many have mentioned before me, Israel is a country with humans in it. And no the Israeli army is not an army to kill… At least not more than other armies are, that’s the nature of armies. Take the silliest most simplistic comparison: Lebanese people living, working and fulfilling their military obligations in Syria, are they traitors? No
Ask yourself: what is Lebanon for this woman? the country where she was thrown out off under the threat to be persecuted? the country that calls her father a traitor? The country to which she can never come back?
That sounds more like an enemy rather than a home. And I hope no one will dare say that she “can” come back… None of the SLA members who came back or who never left led a normal life, they either had to flee to europe or the US or they were harassed.

I’m in agreement with Hussein’s comment. Nothing wrong with helping children from any race, color, creed or nationality.

Nobody “stabbed them in their backs”. They didn’t join SLA for the sake of Israelis, but for the sake of them, themselves. As we see, Israel is among the last places in the middle-east, where Christians can feel relatively safe. Why not contribute to a society who shelters you, feeds and protects you.
In this case, the parents should learn from their offspring.

I’d really like know why people say “better Iran and Syria than Israel” without elaborating on WHY better??

I think you should judge them on actions and not on rhetoric. The way I see it Syria and Iran are no different than Israel and at times worse. While the Israeli government’s actions against my country and I have been hostile, so have the Syrian and Iranian governments’ actions. The way I see it, those three ‘governments’ together threaten my country, my values and my aspirations.

Just because I share the same religion BY NAME with the majority of Syria and Iran doesn’t mean that I have to blindly support them or their rhetoric.

In my eagerness to respond to the first sentence of Jake the Snake I neglected to read the rest of the enlightening comment.

Jake the Snake’s hope for two governments and a final showdown clearly illustrates the deep desire of the opposition to see their military supremacy used internally in order to impose their imported values, interests, and goals.

Let them remember though that we are no rats, and that THEY and their Iranian and Syrian friends do not determine who is Lebanese and who isn’t. And it isn’t up to them to ‘eradicate’ us or turn us into ignorant and blind slaves and subjects of the Wilayet al Fakih.

    Just Information.
As you know there are Durzi citizens of Syria living on the Israeli held Golan. Unlike some Palestinians these Durzi have concluded that killing Israelies and getting killed and becomming beggers and living on world charity make no sense and will not advance any Arab cause. So they are living extremely well they can travel free all over Israel and work in any place where Israeli ID is not demanded. Several are working in Israeli medical institutions, much like this doughter of SLA people. They are Syrian citizens. But as always more patriotism is demanded from the Lebanese and ex Lebanese because… realy because of what?

Jake:Why do we always have to choose? Syria or Israel? Both have destroyed our beautiful country and murdered and tormented Lebanese of all factions.Have you forgotten how the southerners (Shiites)welcomed the Israelis when they rid them of the PLO?
    As for the SLA…….
Be compassionate towards victims of geography and circumstance.

Some body mentioned to me. Palestinians work in Israeli Hospitals. For a long time Shiaa from South Lebanon worked in Saffad hospital. Arab MDs from several countries work for short or long periods in Israeli hospitals. Palestinian and other Arabs who need hospitals use at times Israeli hospitals. Shell I go on?
