Give Tripoli And Akkar Some Credit

Plain Talking

While we are all equal partners in making this victory happen, the loud and sincere support the Army got in Tripoli and Akkar will help make sure this tragedy doesn’t happen again in the future..

Jubilation in Tripoli

The episode was a resounding Intelligence failure from Alquaeda.

Assafir’s main story yesterday detailed what we knew all along. That Alquaeda believed that the Northern Sunni city of Tripoli would be a friendly environment for it to start violent activities that would ultimately culminate in an “Islamic Emirate” in Northern Lebanon.

The plan didn’t work out, not only because Alquaeda didn’t understand the nuances in Tripoli, but because the people of Tripoli and Akkar rejected being part of an Islamic state and stuck with their Lebanese Identity. They have instinctively sided with the Lebanese Army and wholeheartedly welcomed their victory. (Just ask Absi’s wife who said she was “disappointed” by the backstabbing from alleged Tripoli accomplices)

Distaste for the city of Tripoli and its people can sometimes be felt in opposition circles. Hezbollah’s supporters think that Tripolitans and Akkaris are betraying “The real cause” by supporting leaders they perceive as American stooges (Tripoli is a strong supporter of PM Seniora). The FPM has also lately gotten into the habit of lumping all Hariri-supporting Sunnis (liberals, moderates and pro-Hariri Islamists) into the same camp as the fringe Salafist-jihadis terrorists, sometimes making outrageous claims like “it is Mr. Hariri himself who is funding and arming them.”

But Tripoli and Akkar deserve more.

If I were an Alquaeda leader watching the news from outside and seeing TV footage of Northern Lebanese Muslims overjoyed by my defeat, i would fire behead my intelligence chief and start searching for a different place to wage my Jihad.

The people of the North deserve credit for opposing terrorism the same way the people of the South deserve credit for opposing Israel.

  1. The one good thing to come out of this tragedy, is that from now on,any young impressionable man who was vaguely “enchanted” with their ideology, would think twice before joining such scum and risk being branded a traitor to his own people.

Long live Lebanon and its army.

  2. Doesn’t the North have the biggest number of army men and women? And the biggest number of army martyrs?
It was definitely a miscalculation by the terrorists, but I mean I thought the reaction of “ahl el chmel” was very normal, since these were their kids dying day in day out.
Not to deprive them of any credit, but North Lebanon is the army!

I hate to say it, but if the North takes credit for Al Kaeda, and the South takes credit for Israel… what about the middle? no credit? not as Lebanese? traitors?
or do they just PAY for reconstruction and for infrastructure?

  3. All I wanted to say was, let’s just be happy for a divine victory for all Lebanese and let’s not divide and give extra credit for some…

  5. Now that is a surprise!!! Al Qaeda you say??? Al Qaeda wanted to create a small state in Lebanon??? Have you people lost your mind??? Al Qaeda establishing a state is like Ben Laden sending a map to Donald Rumsfield letting him know where he trim his beard!!!! Is this a kind of joke, and have we become so stupid to believe that crap? Think guys and girls. Why would al Qaeda proclaim any territory while they spend their time hiding? Or are they going to openly fight the whole West from Tripoli? My God and I thought the hezbos had no logic!

  6. There was a joke in a play about Akkar few years ago, and it goes like this :

Teacher: A geography question; Wein Akkar (where is Akkar)?

Student: Bil Jesh (in the army)…

The fact is , Akkar is the heart and soul of the army…

  7. But Ralf,
The official version of just about every authority, after investigations, is that Alquaeda is behind it.

Even if its the designs of Syria, the instrument was still widely believed to be Alqaeda.

    What’s your hypothesis?

  8. I have to wonder if the South would have given as much to the Army and appreciated them as much had this kind of incident happened in, say, Ain El Hilweh.

Not to stir up sectarian tensions here, but i have feeling that some Lebanese are not as Lebanese as others, if you know what I mean.

  10. it would be nice to see the lebanese army take back southern lebanon from hezbollah. that would be a serious celebration when all of lebanon is under lebanese army/government control.

  11. The Tripoli Emirat is a 100% Syrian plan. Al Qaeda do not need and is surely not thinking of proclaiming a territory. They had Afghanistan and they lost it without any regret, they cannot fight openly the americans, they even prepared themselves to loose Afghanistan before 9/11 by killing the Lion of the Pansheer. They will not come and say: we lost Afghanistan but we won Tripoli! There are no moutains to hide in Tripoli and the US will jump on the occasion to invade North Lebanon since it is clearly a proclaimed ennemy territory.
If there was a plan named “Imarat Trablous” it is surely not made in tora bora, but made in Sham! In case of a total independance of Lebanon from Syria, and in case of a presidential election where the majority gets its president, Fateh al Islam proclaims the Emirat of the North without mentionning Al Qaeda taking away from Hariri the majority of the Sunni population of Lebanon by force, The south and the beqaa denies the president and the government and occupy militarely both regions, Beirut and the mountains are surrounded and their fall is iminent between the hands of a syrian “friendly” leader that has been attacking since the day he got back the wahhabits and the salafits. Aoun takes the power backed by the majority of the free besieged lebanese, Syria gives him back the north or probably annexes it and Hezbollah are named consuls of the South for another long period with the Irani blessing. One other link to this theory is the assassination of Pierre Gemayel by fateh el islam themselves. Many christians saw in him the same rage and charisma as his uncle Bachir, he had the same family name but not his fathers bad reputation. He was on every talk show biting hezboz ignorants, shouting even louder than them and was the only one who escaped the metn election massacre which made him perfectly presidentiable. He was also strong enough to get the support of the christians and druze and sunni at the time of application of the first steps of the scenarion.

  12. Ralf: “If there was a plan named…”

Plans and their related battles are all part of process and therefore each is named in the West. But it seems that in the Middle East only victorious events have names, whereas losses are rarely named or counted. No name, no loss. Guess who invented zero.

  13. Very well said.

As for the FPM well, what did you expect? they couldn’t even forecast the by-elections at Metn-North, how could they understand Sunni mentality?

As for Hizbullah well, their leaders can only follow their own line of thinking to reach their conclusions; In other words, they fail to understand that the Sunni majority has deliberately chosen their position in favour of Lebanon, not Sunnis Hariri and Siniora, quite unlike the backing Hizbullah and Amal has; they are backed by Shias because they are Shias, full stop.

  15. Calm your horses Sunni guys, you just discovered nationalisme 2 years ago and only becoz the syrians blowed your leader. Your allegiance has always been to Syria, Egypt, the paelstinians and the arabs and rarely to an independant Lebanon. Now that you are finaly on the right track, you are welcome and encouraged to keep the Country’s total independance in mind. Keep up the good work.

  17. As a Lebanese from Mount Lebanon, I want to thank our people in the North for their unlimited support to the Army and the Lebanese Sovereignty. Thanks to these Army Great Martyrs who made Hariri dream of One Lebanese Sovereign Nation become more and more Real and Close to Light. Unlike the troublesome people for the South, Ahl Shmal are giving to and building their Country, instead of being Proxy-Terrorist for the Persian ambitions to build Safavid Empire.

  18. Kheireddin, I know how pissed you get when we talk about these things, and especially how proud you are that your grandfather was somebody, at a certain time in a shitty place. You might be a nationalist yourself, but the sunnis throughout the history minus the last 2 years were clear with what they wanted for Lebanon, to be part of al ‘Ouma al 3arabia. I remember the first post you wrote how arab you want Lebanon to be, by the time you were killing each others you and harfouch about our identity as lebanese, and now once more you proove again by your silly response what kind of Lebanon you want. Stop bringing back your grandfather and talk about yourself, and what you believe. I don’t have any hatred for you or the Sunni, I said what i believe is right, and that is that the majority of the Sunni has always wanted an arab Lebanon, if not for lebanon to be part of an arab country. u can go read history while I play in front of my house. ;-)

  19. Guys, especially Ralf, please look at the Present Time. Lebanese Sunni finally joined at 100% the ”Lebanese Project” thanks to Hariri and Social Evolution. They joined the patriotic hard liner Lebanese form Mount Lebanon, Maronites and Druze. PM Soloh started the needed First Step, and Hariri came and achieved it.

  21. That is where unfortunately you are wrong, as long as one lebanese does not consider himself an arab, Lebanon will not be an arab country and WE are NOT an arab country ans will NEVER be! And this you should understand it and engrave it in your head. We are a country of multiple people and civilizations gathered in a diversified corner because it is a diversified corner. It is not because we speek arabic that we are arabs. It is not because there are many muslims that we are arabs, it is not because we have many artists and thinkers that expressed themselves in arabic that we are arabs! I refuse that Lebanon be called an arab country as much as I refuse that Lebanon be called a phoenician, egyptian, persian, jew, roman ………… We are a mixte of all these and as long as we want to categorize ourselves ONE of these we will still fight each others. That is what the sunni shi3a maronite orthodox and the rest never understood, and that is what led us to civil war, and believe me that is what will lead to a new civil war if part of the lebanese are going to insist of framing the others. Let us draw a final line here. Part of us are arabs, part of us are westerners descendant, part are armenian, part are turkish…. We have a chance of being diverse lets preserve this diversity. I hope you will agree to these moderate terms that respects everybody’s feelings and beliefs.

  24. See why you deserve everything the Gemayil family did to you!!! because like all sunni muslim you believe that before the arab civilization there was nothing, from Morrocco to Indonesia you wipped out any form of past culture to impose your exclusive views. You are not better than the shi3a you are attacking kheireddin, you are not better than those Taliban who destroyed all the 2000 years old buddhas, you want to be arabs and spread your camel culture on the whole world, you respect no diversity and no common ground, its your way or the highway, now you open my eyes on something I thought dissapeared from the Lebanese sunni, but when I see that the so-called moderate are nothing but liars I wonder if Aoun is not right with everything he says about you. I repeat what I said at first, you have never been nationalist not before, not the past two years, nor will you ever be.

  29. Temper temper oussama!
a moderator can obviously see who was moderate and who was extreme.
A moderator can see who is using slure and bad language on a blogg.
a racist by definition is a person who do not respect diversity. A dog is usually the one who keeps barking. The khara is most often the one who uses the word.
