Defeat For Peace?

One of Lebanon’s most respected commentators speculates on the nature of a probable war scenario between Syria and Israel.

In his flagship Monday column, Ghassan Tueni, a March 14 figure and father of a martyred Journalist, imagines a situation where Syria and Israel go to a pretend-war over the Golan heights. Mr. Tueni thinks loudly: Why not? Both can win. Israel would win militarily and restore morale to its Armed forces after its humiliation last July.

Syria would win too. This scenario would allow Israel to give the Golan back to Syria after they sign a peace treaty.

Mr. Tueni’s point? Only Lebanon (including Hezbollah) would lose.

  1. Israel prefers an Assad regime than a “Muslim Brotherhood” regime. It will do anything to keep Assad regime in power. The issue is that it wants a peaceful front and Syria wants the Golan. It is a win-win situation. The issue is Iran and Hizb-Iran. How do they fit in that scenario?

  2. For All the readers out there – let me help you understand Israels mentality..

Leave her alone – stop bothering her – she has returned home after 2000 years and is reclaiming her natural god given place on this earth

This it – she wants no more and no less

She wants to be welcomed home by her arab cousins

and so far – her arab cousins have been like hyeneas toward her – which has made her have to fight for her life

think hard arabs – are most of the problems in the middle east caused by hyena like behavior?

    think hard arabs !!

and stop acting like hyenas – toward israel- and eachother

  3. @Newsstand..

The project is on hold now but the infrastructure is still in place in case i want to resume it.

It’s a great concept, but it’s taking way too much time and energy because it’s semi manual.

Also, somehow it never caught up with readers. Of 800-1200 readers who come to the Beirut Spring every day, only 20-30 go to the newsstand, that’s less than 3%. of the total.

Until I find a way to fully automate it, it’d rather devote my energy to Beirutspring posts, don’t you agree :) ?

  4. I did not know that Marijuana was already approved for therapeutic uses. But even then, Tueni was really pushing the dose.

  5. Jeha:

well… you heard the man: “Remember: This is the Middle East.”
There’s no such thing as “too strong” dose
    :)

  6. I don’t think he is proposing this idea, but rather must have heard that the idea has circulated among the Syrian “strategists”, so he is ridiculing the idea, and making fun of those who have proposed it in Damascus:

    ???? ?????? ?? ??? ?????? ?????? ??????? ????? ?????????

So it is Damascus who has proposed it, not Tueini.

  7. Around 65% of Israelis disapprove giving
back the Golan, for peace (me too…).
Olmert’s government is so weak, it is
highly unlikely it could do such a dramatic
    move.
In the meanwhile? they pretend, they drag feet
and they are “waiting… for Godot”.
In such a volatile ME you better don’t light
    unnecessary fires.

  8. I am with Jeha.

Tueni is very smart and knows more than all of us put together. However, that does not preclude him from being wrong very often.

E.g. One week before Lahoud’s extension, Tueni guaranteed his readers that Lahoud was gone.
