Lahhoud’s Next Step

Links

Everyone was speculating on what Lahhoud’s next step, the one ‘dictated by his conscience’, would be. Now, the secret is revealed.

According to Alhayat, Lahhoud told “Western sources” that he intends to hand in the Lebanese top position to the Army. He said that he’s doing so because he will not hand in a Maronite position to a Sunni. This could go down well in Bkirki, considering all the talk about a unity government potentially replacing the presidency.

It would be a weird coincidence if the Naher Al Bared fights end in early November, don’t you think?

  1. I doubt that Lahoud would hand it over to the army. Its unconstitutional. We all know that Lahoud has never disobeyed the constitution (unless of course changing it to his benefit).

  2. Yes, there is no precedence for that kind of action. I mean Gemayel never gave the position to Aoun who ended up fighting Ja3ja3, who is now allies with Gemayel who now hate Aoun.
What is wrong with you people? How can you support any of these psychos?

  3. I like the sarcasim but here is where you are mistaken.

    1. That period was pre-Taef and I do not know what if the President had the power to take such an action.
    2. Aoun declared himself Prime Minister and was not given the title of President
    as you mentioned.
    3. Who are “you people”. Just because my last name is Aoun doesn’t mean I anyway a supporter of FPM.

That last sentence really degraded your response.

  7. For the last time, it is not up to Lahoud to decide who he will or won’t hand over the country to.

Have these people no concept of the CONSTITUTION?

On Nov. 22, 2007. Lahoud’s term expires. At that point, by law, he is a private citizen. End of story.

I’ll say it again: As long as these people treat the constitution like toilet paper, there really is no point calling Lebanon a “state”. States, by definition, have constitutions and rules and laws. Until that changes, Lebanon is nothing more than a piece of geographic land, mired in anarchy.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but he’s Orthodox, right?

Don’t laugh Mustapha. The Syrians are engineering Suleiman for the presidency. He’s their choice to succeed Lahoud. Murr made that clear last night, and this is the substance of Berri’s “initiative.”

The fighting, it’s safe to assume, will continue until Suleiman gets into Baabda. That’s exactly how he’s fixing it.

  11. The only reason we have outside countries controlling our fate is because we let them.

I think the only way out of the mess that Lebanon is in, is to have Aoun as president. We need someone who is strong and does not take crap from anyone.

I’m not sure how likely it is for Aoun to be president, mainly because we are afraid of change and always tend to go with he safe bet … Bu I hope from the bottom of my heart that the lebanese people will finally learn that unless we have a drastic change in he country, we will only have ourselves to blame.

  12. Sleiman can be the best president we had in a long time. As much as i dislike militaries in politics, this guy will surprise many!
