Confessions: Fateh Al Islam Members Worked For Syria Without Knowing It

News Analysis

According to the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, Ahmad Merhi, the liaison officer between fateh Al Islam and Syrian Intelligence was caught in Ashrafieh.

Tony at Across the Bay has the details, but he wrote his article quoting the Kuwaiti Al-Rai Al aam, a less-than-credible source, before LBC confirmed the details with its “exclusive” story this evening.

LBC’s story is consistent with many of the details of Al-Rai al aam’s (same source?), but LBC has some even juicier stuff:

Ahmad Mer’i was recruiting the Islamists by convincing them that they are on a mission to protect the Sunnis in Lebanon. According to the LBC, many fighters have later discovered that they’re working for the Syrian Intelligence so they gave up the fighting or handed themselves up.

Mustapha–seems like your post yesterday about Hariri beginning to give in to Hezbollah’s demands might be accurate. Today alNahar’s english site is reporting that Saniora has put “an expansion of the cabinet” in the spotlight.

and thanks for fixing the comments section, the white page always confused me.

were I did say there were signs, and more and more are showing.

I still hope for common sense to prevail though, although i’m not confident: read today’s piece by abu kais:

Moustapha, just to be clear, I didn’t quote al-Ra’i al-’Aam exclusively. I also quoted an-Nahar and Asharq al-Awsat to put together the story. Second, al-Ra’i al-’Aam was quoting Lebanese security sources, as was an-Nahar, Asharq al-Awsat, and indeed, LBC.

    Sorry tony, my bad.

But the annahar and alsharkal awsat stories are about more general stuff than the mer’i brothers’ link with Assef Shawkat, and al’raim al am was the only source for that particular story. Am I correct?

I am tremendously skeptical with al-Ra’i al-’Aam after it featured an “exclusive” story last year that turned out to be completely false and misleading. I can’t put my finger on which story right now..

thanks for the link to abu kais, that was a great read.
i guess i have the same concerns as geagea…if the national unity government proposal goes through it would mean that march 14th would have made huge concessions as a reward Hezbollah’s stubbornness. A bad precedent.

The expansion of government plan was in the works for a long time…doesn’t matter anyway, its only going to last until September or whenever they get a new President.

I thought that the presidential election is in November!

I think the government (March 14) wants to have an election so it is taking a risk by forming a bigger (including opponents) government.
