Mustapha, you are absoluetly right. This is Bashar’s dream come true, as it would ensure that Lebanon would never recover or prosper.
I fear that al Qaida elemnts will make their way to Lebanon now in the name of fighting Israel, but will end up destroying our progressive way of life long after the current fight with Israel is over. In my opinion, they can be stopped if Damascus is sanctioned and its totalitarian regime held accountable for the crimes it committed in Lebanon.

I just don’t see how al Qaeda fits in though. Why would they of all people care about Hizb’Allah? Both groups are from different planets. Perhaps Ayman’s speech writer made a mistake. Perhaps he meant he would joint Israel against Nasrallah & Co.
By the way, have Nasrallah & Co. issued any statements since this broadcast? I haven’t read or seen anything. Would be interesting.

I thought Al Qaeda were sunnis massacring Shiites in Iraq..and now they want to fight with Shiite Hezbollah? A sunni morroccon friend of mine said Al Qaeda were shiites…is it really that complicated, or is it all just propagandist bullshit? Is the Telegraph a serious source? (-;

I don’t know about you guys, but it’s really frustrating for me to re-discover evry time how divided the Lebanese opinion is about all issues in Lebanon.
Forget about the bullshit media about the union of the Lebanese around Hezbollah; that’s all part of a psychological war.
Hezbollah and all the Shiites in Lebanon have one unchanging vision of their Lebanon and the rest of the Lebanese have a different one. Each has its own popular support and is not submissive to the other’s point of view.
The way I see it, the only way to succeed in post-war reconstruction of Lebanon is to separate the South of Lebanon and parts of the Bekaa valley into an independent or Federal state, which can also serve as an open fighting ground for all Arab ‘warriors’ who wish to flex their muscles against Israel.

If you want even a shot at avoiding a recurrence of the current war you had better manage to get Hezbollah and their Shi’a supporters out of the southern suburbs of Beirut.

It is harmful to a democracy when a minority is oppressed, persecuted, diminished, or ignored. Democracy thrives on diversity and disagreement. It makes the democracy stronger. If you seek to silence those who disagree with you then you are limiting the intellectual capacity of your society and contributing to your own future weakness.
IMO, the problem has never been the shia or the people of hezzbollah. It is their weapons. Without weapons the hezzbollah would be forced to enter sincere dialogue and debate about the future of Lebanon. Through such dialogue they could help Lebanon become a stronger, more diverse, and more successful nation. It will be a mistake to shun or punish them.

Siding with the US/Israel won’t get you anywhere any quicker than siding with Hizbollah/Syria/Iran. It’s tough, but IMO you have to insist on being independent (even if your government can’t be).

You don’t have to “side” with anyone. Just remain neutral (which includes not allowing anyone to launch attacks from your back yard or store weapons in your basement), and you’ll have one partner for peace in Israel. I dunno about Hiz, though.

* israel’s return to 1967 borders; including return of shebaa farms to lebanon which syria has already agreed
* exchange of prisoners
* 25km buffer zone on both sizes of israeli-lebanon border monitored by un multinational force
* hibullah agreement to nationalise its military wing as a separate “command” within laf
* hizbullah agreement to sever military command & control ties to mugniyah
* hizbullah/nasrallah agreement to appoint new military leadership for laf hizbullah command, including a separate cic with authority equivalent to current cic michel sleiman
* hizbullah agreement to allow laf inventory of all munitions, place all such inventories under laf procurement & control
* admission by idf that the idf patrol ambushed by hizbullah reported on 12 jul was on the LEBANESE side of the israeli-lebanon border at or near aitaa al-shaab and that idf patrols ROUTINELY cross the border into lebanese territory on such patrols
* admission by hizbullah that killing and capturing idf forces on 12 jul was an unnecessary provocation despite idf’s unauthorised, provocative incursion into lebanese territory

Or the Hiz said so so it must be true? But even they don’t say so.

Ibn, I agree with most of what you say, but the article you posted says the soldiers were kidnapped ACCROSS the border from Aitaa al-Shaab. I wouldn’t be surprised if Israel does indeed cross into Lebanon routinely, but it would be good if you could cite a source as most media tells us Israel withdrew six years ago. As I said, I agree with you, but honest quoting is important.

I’m an American and devastated at what Israel has done. I’m ashamed of my country and ashamed of any Jewish person I know who supports Israel in what they are doing and I know plenty. I sit in front of CNN and cry looking at innocent, dead Lebanese babies - and I can’t turn it off because we, I, us Americans need to see this reality and what know we are doing with our American-made bombs. By-the-way Israel was never a totally soverign state anyway - Britan set it up as a refugee state with Palestine after WWII - it was to be shared - that land - with the Palestines who were the original owners - not taken permanently, and call it their holy land. We don’t know this over here really. You can only read it on Arab Internet sites. We are brainwashed by Zionists in America who stole the election to get a Zionist president who needs war to keep the gas companies profitable (Did you know Exxon is soaring in profits right now!?!?!?!) I am appalled, heart-sick, thinking of moving to Canada and will make a home there as I don’t think there is a solution. I am sorry I am an American tonight. I apologize to you for all of us, all of us who don’t know what are doing.

nasralha…very nicely put! Those cave dwelling folks would like nothing better to see everyone living out of caves and marriage to more than one woman and to have her covered from eyeball to foot. The terrorist will not be satisfied until one of them detonate a nuke on American soil sealing that entire region’s fate. Word to the wise, trading nukes with America is simply not wise. Actually, its just not environmentally friendly. If people of that region wish to curtail death, they only have to solve their own problems by biting the bullet and coughing up terrorist training camps and regimes such the ones nasralha mentioned. I wonder why Lebanon does not build its own defenses including intelligence. When there are enemies all around you, one needs to have strong defense as deterent. Economy is good for growth but nation needs to divert their revenue towards defense initially. I feel deeply sad when any nation can intrude airspace,land or block sea on any other nation without any army defending it no matter what the reason is. I am surprised to know that Lebanon does not have Airforce or Navy. I hope government of Lebanon does divert some of their revenue towards building strong defense forces like other nations once current war ceases.
