Institutionalized Stereotyping (updated with more fun)

Uncategorized

Tangoal..

It must be an Arabic thing. Reading the football commentaries in English, I couldn’t find anything that matches Alarabiya’s excessive use of stereotypical metaphors to describe competing teams. Did you know that the Spanish Matador has slain the hapless Ukranians 4:0? What about the Samba Dancers, the Japanese Computer? the Tango Dancers? The German Machines?

I don’t know what to make of this, I’m not sure if all Argentinan players can dance the Tango, but would the Saudis appreciate them being called the Camel Riders? How about the Tabbouleh Eaters for the Lebanese? Hold on, I have a good one, how about this headline: “The Iraqi bombers have blown up the Samba Dancers to pieces”

**Update**
Sorry, I just can’t help it, here’s some more fun from Alarabiya:

Rough Translation:
The Korean Dragons burn the French roosters..
The Brazilian Samba beats the Australian Kangooroos

  1. :D
but that’s precisely why watching the World Cup on Arabic TV is so interesting! Our commentators give us history lessons, dance lessons, random facts, etc etc.
    It’s hilarious.

i mean… yes… ur right… its so wrong and demeaning to the teams!

  4. I wonder what the announcers would call the players from the Armenian National team. Oh maybe: Basterma Bedo has the ball, The Anjari Artin makes a great save. hehe. Any others?

  6. … no wonder why i hate watching footbal commentaries in arabic.

These commentators (and journalists) are another symptom of the decaying culture.

They think it is funny: NOT

They think it is not offensive: IS

They think they know the world: they know shit.

And these are the “educated” or “polished” ones that go on TV.

    The road is looooonnnng.

  7. This is both hilarious and pathetic.
Actually, it is just pathetic. The hilarious part is your depiction of it.

    I agree with Josey Wales:
    The road is looooonnnng.

  8. What about when they get into psychology and character study:
    - The Germans are perseverant (they play in the 90th minute).
    - The English are cold.
    etc…
Then History lessons and cultural studies:
    - The Japanese samurais.
    - The Vikings.
    - The Dutch windmill.
    etc…
    Or:
This move or goal reminds me of back in … bla bla bla… bla bla

I agree it is annoying, and really an uncalled for, and a non-needed form of stereotyping. But I don’t seem to share the almost personal hatred projected by fellow bloggers who left a comment.

I don’t know. I find myself more lenient in my critic here. Football is a wonderful game. I don’t want to see the political side of the issue (Arabism). I want to keep it in the “game/sport” category, and laugh about it. Even when it is not funny (which is the case all the time). And I THINK that I sometimes miss hearing Arabic commentators… Just for the heck of it. Just for a few minutes.
Anyway, I am too nostalgic these days.

  9. More idiocy from the ignorant brothers, those who sleep through genocide but are offended by a buzzing fly.

Some papers described Paintsil [Ghana player] as a “Mossad agent”,….

What the fuck business of Egypt is it what a Ghanean player wants to do???

  12. This is a bit off-topic, but since we’re talking about the World Cup and the football players from different nationalities, check out this interesting article:

  13. Let’s follow this rationale to its logical conclusion -for example, “Ukrainian Kozaks Pound the Repressed Homosexuality out of Saudi Arabia’s Hapless Urban Nomads.” Gee, this is too easy.

  14. I sure the American Imperialists (that was too easy) defeat Ghana, and that Italy operatically defenestrates the Czecks, allowing thus the neo con imperialist program to procede to the 2nd round, where unfortunately they will then proceed to be demolished to the beat of the samba…
