A lot of people in the Arab world watch Aljazeera. The online polls are hence, to an extent, reflective of the Arab point of view. But when 72% of Aljazeera’s online voters (people with internet connections, mind you), say that they received the news of Zarkawi’s death “with sadness,” it is fair to say that the Arab world has a big public opinion problem.

Translation.
Poll Question:
How did you recieve the news of Zarkawi’s death?
Poll Answers:
With joy: 14.8% (5,531 voters)
With sadness: 72.3% (27,109 voters)
With no interest: 12.9% (4,852 voters)
Total voters: 37,492
Hello, my name is Mustapha and I blog in The Beirut Spring about Lebanese society and politics. I started in February 2005 after the killing of P.M. Rafik Hariri.

Those people are standards Arabs and non-Shia Muslims.
I think El Jazira news are all biased….and this station is the worst immage of arabs…….
As for Zarkawis death,it s really good news……hope to hear about the death of most dictators and terrorists for a modern arab world…….especially fanatics be it muslims or christians………and hope one day we ‘ll hear about the death of Samir Geagea and Hassan Nasralah……..
i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again:
online polls are not representative of public opinion. the more respectable news agencies provide a disclaimer concerning this.
so although it may be “fun” to state something like this, it is not exactly fair … (unless you’re basing it on something more than just a poll with 30k voters).
Anon 5:46 - don’t forget Aoun
It is really worying that 27,000 are sad that zarkawi is dead. Thate means 27,000 agree to his tactics of beheading and bombing civilians, mosques, weddings, etc… I think Al-Jazeera was the most sad. If u read their coverage after his death, you could note the articles on how the Americans violated human rights by showing pictures of zarkawi’s body! They then go to interview his family! What are they thinking of? How does their logic work? They are really sick…
On another note, I would be really interested if a true opinion poll is conduct throughout the arab world to see the discripancies between online polling and the traditional one. It might indicate the level of accuracy of online polling.
Who are those people?
Our friends, neighbors and relatives. The nuts, and the “yes, but…” crowd.
I know this is not a real poll, but I venture to say, it is not far from the truth (even if you give or take 20%, it is still bad).
It is well beyond a PR problem Moustapha. It is a deep cultural and societal crisis. (Adonis: the Arabs are [already] extinct)
For some reason these numbers make me laugh. Oddly enough, I am not offended… I sort of expected such a result from al-jazeera. I am “with no interest” vis-a-vis this poll. I sometimes wonder if we all live on the same planet.
I noticed that AlJazeera polling is flawed in the sense that it allows you to vote again and again as long as you deleted the cookies it places on your computer. And this can be done automatically with software.
Until AlJazeera fixes/addresses this issues (i.e one vote only per IP address) those polls are meaningless.
P.S: I noticed this flaw when they had some polls about Syria/Lebanon and the result were as suprising as this one.
A Sad Truth
To be honest, I really think that this poll is very alarming.
This is one of the reasons why most of the civilized nations across the world hate and disrespect the Arab/Muslim ideologies.
I live in Montréal, but I don’t look Arab, but I was born and raised in Lebanon. Without them knowing that I am an Arab, I am starting to realize from conversations with a lot of people all across, that there is a growing hatred and disgust towards Arabs and Muslims, Is it because of their ideologies? I think so.
One of the girls I was talking to in a club also did not know that I am an Arab and suddenly she saw an Arab guy passing through and then she started hammering him with big words clearly indicating that she hates Arabs, and after that she was direct in saying that she hates their cultural ideology. This girl was from Ecuador, imagine! even South Americans.
Know, after seeing this poll, if it is accurate, again I say if it is accurate, then I would sadly say that I am starting to understand why this is the case.
If anybody reads this comment , Please let me know if you are starting to feel the same way, especially if you live abroad in a Western Country, Or is it just me !
there is a solution for us lebanese to be not steriotyped by the west and which is: by claiming that we are 100% lebanese and not 100% arabs, for exemple we are mediterenian people with mixed ethnecity, which is more true even though some people deny this fact that was proven scienteficly and published in national geographic (check if u dont beleive) and claim that we are originly phenecian and majorly influenced by the crussaderes, the arabs and finally the turks and WHATEVER the relegion is, so all the lebanese whether we are muslims or christians we share the same blood amd we are ALL LEBANESE.
Anon 4:33,
I’m sensing the same negative vibes here in London. So your not the only one.
Well thanx nader…..i don’t think i’m concerned here………i’m lebanese 100% lebanese ,and lebanese aren t arabs at all…….we come from different backgrounds and ethnicities, and we are mediteranean……check some lebanese familes the DeGuise,DeBlaise,Bernard,Charles(muslims) do u think they are originaly arabs, not to mention the Appostolides,Yenni,Kandalaft,DeFreige,Vandal,Osdan………
Well it’s true we share the arabic language with other people in the region, but are belgians and canadians with french language french?
Well arabs should let us be,we the lebanese, cause we have totally different mentality and manners……..
so to hell with zarkawi, the terrorist, and to hell who felt sorry for him, what would they do if their family members where attacked by a terrorist bomb attack from men who belong to alquaeda……….
Nader,
See the piece from the Toronto Sun linked in my latest blog post.
“A lot of people in the Arab world watch Aljazeera. The online polls are hence, to an extent, reflective of the Arab point of view” ???
Hey, who cares about professional sampling methods and statistical rigor, when you can recycle racist anti-Ayyrab stereotypes??
I mean how on earth can we trust these guys who wear dark Pampers diapers in lieu of hats?
Fuckinantisemitzz!
How disgusting!
The poll is NOT scientific. Having said that, who are these people who express these demented views on Al-Jaz and on the blogs?
We do know one of them: Vicretino.
But beyond that, every one of us personally knows at least a couple of people who hold these views or very similar nutty views.
That’s way, way, more than enough.
The Al Jaz numbers are difficult to interpret perhaps, but to say they mean nothing is dishonest.
What?? Swiss and Belizians are staying up at night erasing cookies and re-voting on al-Jaz? Every time there is a poll, and as part of the big Wolfowitz-Wahabi-Cretin conspiracy?
Get real.
I think that this poll is relatively accurate. Even though I am a Lebanese Christian, I have frequently been mistaken for a Muslim, because of my name and my ethnical features. Whenever that happened, the conversation took an antisemitic and anti-Western tone - not that I was surprised.
actualy iam surprised from the voting. !!!
why sadness!!! he killed our people and our families

15-year-old Lebanese
Unfortunately, I think that this does represent the opinion of the majority of the arabs. In the past, I used to think that extremists are a minority. However, it seems now to me that a large majority of the arab population is getting more extremist and more ignorant. This is self-destruction, I hope I am wrong.
