I have mixed feelings about Young. I loved this article about Aoun and he is right on the money on most of his articles and not just this one, but the guy (and I mean Young) is just too damn arrogant in his tone and just too bitter for my taste. He probably has all the rights to be arrogant and bitter but I have a hard time trusting that what he generally writes is because he loves Lebanon or that what he writes is because he hates Lebanon. Gibran on the hand, you just KNEW, he loved Lebanon.

Michael Young’s editorials are always interesting to read, and his current one is no exception. This is freedom of speech in practice and we have to accept it.

However, in reading the article, I am sort of disappointed by Michael Young’s usually correct analysis. It seems as if he is taking 1% of GMA’s words and actions and making them speak for the other 99%. The article doesn’t show any flexibility in analysis and is only focusing on a minute few issues, linking his false version of events during the 1988-1990 period to his false analysis of what is going on today. It is disappointing to see such narrow minded conclusions coming from him.

So the FPM is pro-Syrian now, is that what he is saying? Does he not remember that had GMA wanted to become President by appeasing the Syrians he would have become President 16 years ago? So what does he think we have been doing for the past 16 years?

I mean come on Michael Young, if you think this is all about the Presidency, don’t you think GMA could have struck a deal with the Syrians at any time during the 1990’s and came back to Lebanon? The Syrians wouldn’t have loved more than a popular anti-Syrian figure to make peace with them and return to Lebanon, because that would legitimize their occupation even more.

Now we’re in 2006, and does Michael Young really believe we are about to sell out to the Syrians after all this time and effort? What a shame and disappointment! Who does he prefer we entrust the country too in that case?

Michael Young admits to GMA’s popularity, but then dismisses it, trying to justify his popularity by saying that Christians want a strong leader. I say to him, yes they do, and so do Muslims and all Lebanese.
It is plainly disgusting to see him admit to GMA’s popularity, and then claim that even though, GMA shouldn’t be President. This is an insult to the hundreds of thousands of Lebanese that support GMA and the FPM.
So does he think we are all a bunch of goats and sheep?

Either way, maybe someone should tell Michael Young that we don’t care what the Batrak thinks. This isn’t the year 1200 where the Pope comes and crowns Kings and Queens anymore. Whether Michael Young likes it or not, we know who our next President already is.

I suggest he saves his rude words for the thugs and thieves that deserve it.

One more thing to add:

Does Michael Young really believe from the bottom of his heart that GMA is pro-Syrian now? That the FPM is going to do the bidding of Syria in Lebanon now? History speaks for itself, however, let’s just not forgot those who were in bed with Ghazi Kanaan, Khaddam, and the worst of them, running governments and ministries in Lebanon during the 1990’s, but which we don’t bring up out of respect for those who haved died. So all of a sudden what they did in the past has been cleared?

Either way, it seems as if Mr. Young is not too please with the MOU between the FPM and Hezbollah. Maybe he would have like Jumbat and the gang to keep pushing Hezbollah into a corner until they really did get “radical”?
If there is war between the U.S. and Iran, which might occur sometime in 2006, the FPM and GMA are going to be the only ones keeping Hezbollah from firing its guns in support of the Iranians, and you will be thankful for it.

Who is GMA? just kidding, but as he is no longer a general, can we just call him Mister, or if he becomes president, must we call general president aoun, or maybe generalissimo for short!
We have had such good luck with Generals as presidents, i am so glad that we have another candidate, because if there is one thing the military teaches you, is the value of compromise, consensus, democratic processes etc… and I just know that the general, or former general, when he envisiions being a strong leader, is careful about constitutional boundaries, understands the concept of checks and balances etc.. will not resort to the shortcuts of the deuxieme bureau like Lahoud and Chehab did.

Didnt Jumblatt and Harriri try that already. Bringing them into the Cabinet. Not running against them in the elections. And it didnt work. They are still as radical as they were 12 months ago. Why is Aoun going down this same path?

The only way to get Hizb to disarm is to corner and increase the heat on them. Until the pressure to disarm from the Lebanese is stronger then the pressure to stay armed by Iran/Syria. Its as simple as that.

Sure there are risks but its worth taking to establish a real independent country not a playground for the East and West.

If you think increasing the pressure will make them disarm, it will only push them into a corner where they may do something not very rational.

And that only after solving that issue will it “help” to having the resistance disarmed. So already they acknowledge they are not a Militia and that Shebaa farms is Lebanese. you’re missing Michael Young’s point. He’s not stating the Aoun is Pro-Syrian. He’s saying that Aoun wants to be president no matter what it costs. And the lack of scrupules and decency which that entails is why he believes Aoun is unfit to be president. As do I.
